"CARL" Designed and directed by Juhász Márk
"CARL" is a sci-fi short film set in a distant future in which humanity is enslaved and forced to fight in a gladiators' ring for the amusement of our future robot overlords. Sort of like the flesh circus in A.I. in reverse. The film comes to a climax when the robots pit their ultimate warrior, Carl,
against Space Jesus. Yes, Space Jesus. The whole thing feels a bit like Samurai Jack, both in terms of its aesthetics and skill.
Márk Juhász's student film, made at MOME
Hungary, is a bit zany, but it very effectively demonstrates its creators storytelling ability, managing to tell the story of Carl without any dialogue. In fact, "CARL" was such an effective bit of storytelling that it went on to win best student short at the Melbourne International Animation Festival.
"Animated sci-fi short that starts with the duel of a ROBOT GLADIATOR vs SPACE JESUS but escalates to a much bigger conflict when the love interest appears. CYBORG goes against ROBO-DINOSAUR in a chaotic battle that finally ends in outer space."
