Video: A Tribute To Carrie Fisher

A new tribute to Carrie Fisher from the folks at the Official Star Wars Youtube channel. My guess is that this was likely played at the Star Wars Celebration event in Orlando. The new trailer for “The Last Jedi” should be released tomorrow, so we’ll make sure to post it the minute it goes up!

Tribute: Hope

"Yesterday it was a sad day for the Star Wars family…
I don't normally do tributes to those who leave us, but this time is different. This time is our Princess. The princess who doesn’t wait in the castle for her prince to rescue her, the princess who confront Vader without fear...
At the beginning I thought to paint a simple portrait, but in the end it would have been a Carrie Fisher’s portrait with Leia’s look. Then I remembered the old times, my sister and I watching VHS tapes over and over again, letting go our imagination beyond that galaxy, far, far away.
So I preferred to represent Carrie Fisher not like the beautiful, imperfect human being she was, but the legend in the eyes of all the kids who, like me, were born in the 80’s. Once again… May the force be with you, Princess."

Music Video: Tribute To David Bowie

Musician Rick Wakeman, the original pianist who played on the iconic David Bowie song “Life on Mars,“ played a haunting piano-only version of the song at the BBC -Radio 2 studios on January 10, 2016 in memory of his friend. The tribute became so popular that Wakeman recorded a new version of that song along with a new version of “Space Oddity“, the proceeds to benefit the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. The digital download is available through Amazon US, Amazon UK, Google Play and iTunes.
Following the overwhelming response to Rick’s appearance with Simon Mayo where he performed Life on Mars as a tribute to David Bowie, Rick has now recorded new versions of both Life on Mars and Space Oddity for digital release on Friday 22nd January, with all artist royalties being donated to Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

Video: Happy Birthday Ada!

"Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer back in the 1800s. She published the first computer program, before the first computer had even been built! December 10th, 2015 is Ada's 200 birthday! So let's all wish her a happy birthday and learn more about her and other great topics in computer science during Computer Science Education Week.

December 7-13 is Computer Science Education Week in the U.S., an annual program to show students the power of code and computer science. Google is a founding partner of CS Education Week and is excited to participate company-wide for the campaign. To Learn More about Computer Science and try different activities visit g.co/csedu."

Humor: RIP Sir Christopher Lee

I personally prefer to think of him roaming Heaven in his Dracula attire,  but I guess the robe would be more fitting.

Fan Art Round-Up: Christopher Lee

Dark Lord Christopher Lee by Ismael Bergara

"Dark Lord Christopher Lee" by Uruguay-based Ismael Bergara (Art-Calavera)
Christopher Lee Fan Art Gallery

Practically every movie-goer of our generation, our parents' generation, or even our grandparents' generation knows what an amazing actor Christoper Lee was, but since his death June 7th, an endless stream of stories about what an amazing person he was in real life have issued forth from all quarters.

He holds the Guinness Record for the most film acting roles, having appeared in over 350 movies, including the Bond, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings franchises.  He recorded a heavy metal album about Charlemagne.  Lee joined the Royal Air Force at age 17, and during World War II, he was a member of a secret unit tasked with hunting Nazis.

What's more amazing is that, as much as a badass as he was, he was best remembered for being a genuinely nice guy.  Some of my favorite Christopher Lee tributes have come from Ian McKellen and Peter S Beagle, both of whom recall how literate he was and how passionate he was about his craft.

Below, we've rounded up some of the best Christopher Lee fan art from around the web.  As usual, if you know of any outstanding fan art we've missed, drop a link in the comments below!

Street Art: Terry Pratchett Murals

London Sir Terry Pratchett Mural by Dr Zadok and Jim Vision
Source: The Telegraph

Painted memorials to the fantasy author, who died earlier this year, have appeared in Bristol and London,

This East End mural was created by street artists (who The Telegraph calls "muralists") Dr Zadok and Jim Vision.  It's located on Code Street, near to where Brick Lane meets Sclater Street, and features author Terry Pratchett, along with some of his best known characters, including Death, Binky, Rincewind, A’Tuin, the Death of Rats, and Albert.  You can check out a progress picture that was tweeted last week.

It's a fantastic tribute, especially considering that Pratchett was notably pro-graffiti, once being quoted as saying, "You ignore graffiti at your peril. It's the heartbeat of a city. It's the voice of the voiceless."

Illustration: Don't forget me...

This drawing has been getting a lot of response lately on my deviantART page for some reason. I wasn’t on Tumblr back in 2011 when I drew this piece after Elisabeth Sladen passed away, so I thought I’d post it here now. Kind of in a reflective mood tonight for various reasons.
I do really appreciate all the kind words about the drawing I’ve received these past couple years. It was something I needed to do out of a sense of emotion and a need to find closure. I’m glad others have enjoyed it.
(The blog I wrote about Lis Sladen’s passing in 2011 is here.)

Music Video: I [Heart] Blade Runner

One fan has created a tribute to the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner - one of the most visually striking films ever made - that mixes a montage of some of the most striking imagery from Scott's classic with a track from one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever recorded, Cloud Atlas. Specifically, the song is "Outro" by M83, which, like Morgan Freeman's voice, could lend gravity to any video footage. While the tribute isn't anything new, the combination of the two fan favorites is beautiful.
"My homage to one of the most beautiful, intricate films ever shot. Brilliant lighting, powerful performances and a great story. A true classic."
