Fresh Take: Elder Heroes

Aged Superheroes by Eddie Liu

"Elder Heroes" by Shanghai, China-based Eddie Liu

Eddie Liu, an artist based in Shanghai, has created a short but wonderful series that imagines what a few of our favorite superheroes might look like when they grow old. In Liu’s interpretation, they’ve lost some of their youthful sheen but retain all of their heroic majesty.

Mash-Up: DC / Marvel Mash-Ups

DC/Marvel Mashed Up Heroes & Villians by Eric Guzman

Eric Guzman has some great DC and Marvel animated-style illustrations on his DeviantArt page, but his recent mash-ups really caught our eye. He combined the general costume ideas for two character to create something unique.  It reminds me of that DC / Marvel cross-over from the nineties.  Some of these were only natural, like combining Shazaam and Thor, but a few of them made me think, like the Mr. Fries / Doc Oct pairing.

Short Film: Orion

"Orion" is a fun animated fan film based on Jack Kirby's New Gods.  The short follows Orion, the natural born son of Darkseid, who was swapped after birth as part of a peace accord.  In this short, Orion battles an army of alien creatures on a desolate planet that may or may not be Apokolips.  The short is exactly feature film quality, but it's a huge step ahead of most animated fan films.

Steampunk Superheroine Redesigns

NoFlutter has redesigned four of comic books most iconic superheroine to give them a Victorian steampunk flavor!  She's done a version of DC's Power Girl, Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Marvel's Captain Marvel.  Her previous designs are super popular with cosplayers, and we can't wait to see these start popping up at conventions.

Fresh Take: Justice League as Samurai

Brittney Williams re-imagines DC’s Trinity as samurai.  Bruce Wayne is my favorite, but I suppose that would be the case in any universe.

Fresh Take: Gotham Crusaders

I would watch the hell out of this TV series.  The cancellation of Young Justice left a huge hole in DC's TV domination.  It was a great show featuring practically every character in the DC universe, great production values, and well-written plots.  It was hard for me to imagine what could fill that hole until I came across Phil Cho's "Gotham Crusaders" gallery.

To me, it looks like an outline for the best Batman TV series yet.  In the gallery below, you can see Phil has worked his own Bat-World in detail. He has even broken the main cast down over 6 seasons. The rosters change over time, and the cast of each season can be used to guess what storylines we would have been able to see, had this show been real.

Alberto Varanda has a fantastic on-going series in which he re-imagines our favorite comic book super heroes as children.

Fresh Take: Superheroine Redesigns

Artist Lord Ingvard has created a series of of female superhero character designs that feature more practical and functional redesigns for several characters from the DC and Marvel universe. They include Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Elektra, Black Canary, Ms. Marvel, Vampirella, Red Sonja, Power Girl, and Zatanna. Here's what the artist had to say about her at series, and why she did it:

My only complaint about these is most of the costumes aren’t as colorful as I like my superheroes to be. Just because they’re designed more practically doesn’t mean they can’t be bright and colorful. Otherwise, these are all outstanding.
"I love comics and superheroes as much as the next nerd, but the women’s costumes—sweet mother of Moses!—the COSTUMES. At the very least, highly impractical. And at worst, incredibly sexist. I mean, EXTREMELY so. Honestly, I don’t know why women haven’t been a lot more angry and vocal about this kind of thing over the years. Like “Ferguson riot” angry. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that expressing one’s sexuality is a natural, healthy thing, and certainly not something to be censured or shamed, but holly hammer of Thor, there’s a time and a place for everything!

That being said, I just had to take a shot at addressing the most obvious problems. Now, I am not by any means an experienced or accomplished character designer. I am not suggesting these costume re-designs are ideal, or even very good. My main goal was to at least TRY to approach the subject of female superheroes with the degree of logic, equality, and respect they—and their readers—deserve."
