Metalwork: Trash into Transformers

This video centers around a talented father and son team who build Transformers statues from scrap metal.  The video comes from Great Big Story and it's part of their "Passing The Torch" series.
"In 2010, Chinese farmer Yu Zhilin and his son Yu Lingyun opened up their own metalworking shop in the country's Hunan Province. Inspired by the futuristic robots from the movie “Transformers,” the pair began fashioning original statues from scrap metal. Their first design took about a month and a half to build, but they’ve since created an impressive array of statues, giving new life to discarded car parts along the way. It’s not just the success of their new business that makes this father-son duo happy; the craft itself has brought them closer together."

Video: Rayna meets a "Robot"

Watch as this little girl declares her love for a “robot” that is in fact an abandoned water heater.  So cute!  I like to imagine her father dragged it in off the curb and set it up in her bedroom as the little girl's personal robotic guardian.
"As the girl turns away, a slow tear trickled down the water heaters face. For no one had ever told the water heater they loved him before."

Video: Ghost in the Shell at the Weta Workshop

Adam Savage visits Weta Workshop to get up close with some of the practical props the effects studio made for the upcoming film Ghost in the Shell. Weta Workshop's Richard Taylor shows Adam the mechanical geisha masks and animatronic puppets his team created, and how Weta Workshop used new fabrication and design technologies to make these props possible.

Quick Pic: Snow BB-8

While I feel bad for all of those who've been buried under piles of snow for the past few days, big storms like that are great news for geeky sculptors  who create awesome stuff in the snow.

Fan Art: Bonding

The scene where Rey plops the helmet on her head is my favorite thirty seconds of the entire franchise, and I need to see Allie Stration's addition to the scene in the next movie.

Lego Creation: BB-8

BB-8 is a particular challenge to LEGO creators, given his spherical body, but the builders of Bright Bricks have managed to recreate a life-size model of everyone's new favorite droid for the film's premiere in the U.K.

Lego Creation: BB-8

Legos BB-8 by Redditor Hendrikdejager

It took Lego a really long time to give us an accurate R2-D2 got an LEGO model.  Let's hope BB-8 gets fast tracked.  Until then, check out this model made by Redditor Hendrikdejager.  Hendrikdejager’s fellow Redditors have been prodding him for instructions or at the very least the parts list, and he was kind enough to release a detailed video explaining the build. You can download the parts list on Pastebin.

HowBB8Works.com is a website created by two Star Wars fans from Spain, product designer Carlos Sánchez and CG artist Emilio “EGPJET3D” Gelardo, who have collected facts, made educated guesses, and created handy visuals to explain how the awesome BB-8 droid from Star Wars: The Force Awakens works.
Inspired by the Droid Mechanics Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, we wanted to build our own astromech and learn about it in the process. Only that we come from the software side of things.

Director J.J. Abrams went old school during production of The Force Awakens. The original trilogy, which mainly used real sets and props, had a special vibe that was missing in the prequel trilogy. Abrams wanted Episode VII to feel organic and tactile, closer in spirit to the original movies. To achieve that, they used as many practical effects as possible, and BB-8 was no exception.

The first known sketch of BB-8 was revealed during Star Wars Celebration 2015

Short Film: Retrofit

Retrofit is set in the near future, when death is just a new beginning for those who can afford it. Dylan, driven by his need for reconciliation, brings his father back from the dead, and houses him in a shabby utility robot ‘acquired’ from the black market. To make matters worse Dylan did this without his father’s consent, and now his father is angry and wants to be switched off. Dylan must now convince him to give life a second chance.

Sweets: Gingerbread BB-8

Say hello to ginger BB8!

Bokkototto demonstrates how to make and assemble a Gingerbread model of the adorable BB-8 from scratch.  He modeled each individual piece of the droid to create a shell, rather than simply baking up a simple sphere.  Then, he assembled the pieces using melted sugar in place of glue.  The results look great, but I can't imagine marshaling the patients to do something like this.
