London-based freelance illustrator and graphic artist Martin Tomsky creates awesomely detailed laser-cut plywood woodcuts.  Each beautiful piece is comprised of many layers, assembled one at a time, to form lyrical scenes inspired by fan favorites such as Adventure Time and Game of Thrones.  In this piece, Tomsky pays tribute to London Below from Neil Gaiman's excellent Neverwhere.

This wooden map is the first in a series of maps from Neutral Ground, a "digital woodshop" based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Designed in collaboration with Alex Griendling, the Woodlands series pays tribute to classic maps from video games, and to the intrepid explorers who dedicated themselves to the discovery of everything in them.

"We grew up during a time when video games came with packed-in manuals. Sometimes, those manuals included a  beautiful map of the world you were soon to discover. Our Woodlands series of laser-etched wood maps is a salute to those who love exploring in fiction and being immersed in the artwork that defines those worlds.

The first in the series is our version of Hyrule inspired by Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. 

Our Woodlands maps are a collaboration with Alex Griendling, a very talented graphic designer based out of Minneapolis.  The maps are etched on beautiful pieces of hand-selected maple ply that measure about 18-1/2" wide by 14" tall."

"Working with Neutral Ground, I designed and illustrated this map of Ocarina of Time’s Hyrule. In addition to making sure the map displayed the correct form of Hylian (Hyrule’s ever-changing language), I played through the most recent 3DS version of Ocarina of Time to ensure the cartography was equally faithful. Doing so helped to make sure the already dense map was full of little details and suprises, like Lord Jabu-Jabu in Zora’s Fountain, and the Royal Family’s tomb in the Kakariko Village Graveyard.

After illustrating the map, I handed it off to Neutral Ground, where they were laser engraved onto 18″ x 24″ pieces of hand-selected wood."

Engraving: Science

Peter Istenik from Slovakia, created this engraved this inspirational message in Black granite.  I love the anatomical design of the skull and hand.  The shading was accomplished by hand engraving the piece.  It's very delicate, and it works very well against the background of the granite.  This particular granite looks like a star field, for which the science theme seems appropriate.
