Documentary: The Long Game

The Long Game is a video essay about the pursuit of success and the modern fallacies regaurding artistic success.  The first half of the documentary, posted above, focuses on the career of Leonardo Da Vinci.  The long and short of it is that success comes with persistence, after year of struggle, not overnight.
"Do you ever have that feeling that everyone else is more successful than you?
If you think that's bad - try being Leonardo Da Vinci."

Advice: Wil Wheaton on Nerds

A little girl wants to know how to deal with being called a nerd, and Wil Wheaton responds.  (There's a transcript on Medium.com.)  Just after Wheaton posted the video, it reached the front page of Reddit, and both the mother and the father of the little girl dropped comments thanking him for the excellent advice.

This video is the perfect companion to another video featuring Wil Wheaton on Why it’s Awesome to be a Nerd.  For even more wisdom from Wesley, give "Not everyone is going to like the thing you made, and that’s okay" a read.

Lecture: Essential Photography Gear

"Essential" is a relative term.  Every situation requires a different set of tool, but in this video, noted photographer Chase Jarvis explains the thinking behind his core kit.  It's a relatively succinct explanation of the various "tiers" of readiness.  Jarvis begins with the bare bones photo kit and moves on to the video kit, before ending with a more hefty production kit.  Few people have the cash to spring for even a small portion of the equipment Jarvis mentions here, but then again, even fewer people get the opportunity to ask a famous photograph for advice.

Video: Wil Wheaton's Advice

During a panel at Denver Comic Con last year, a young gitl contending with bullies in her school asked Wil Wheaton if he’d ever been called a "nerd" when he was a kid. Wheaton's heartfelt response and words of support was so resoundingly awesome that you won't know whether to grab a tissue or whoop for joy.

When this video recently surfaced on Reddit, both of the girl’s mother and her father both voiced their gratitude for the advice Wil offered and provided an update on how their daughter is doing now.

Illustration: Process to Progress

Process to Progress 2013 by Paul Sizer / Website

"My year-ender propaganda poster, this year to address the need to incorporate learning from mistakes, failure and screw-ups into the overall process of progression, in any medium, in any endeavor.

We are often told that we must be perfect right from the start, but the true measure of character is the grace and strength we gain from falling down and getting back up. As long as the amount of times we get up outnumbers the times we fall, that is progress. And sometimes mistakes yield far more interesting outcomes than what we plan. Having that opportunity to allow mistakes and failures to inform and educate us is essential to creative growth."
