Cosplay: Sithboy

A Hell Boy / Darth Maul Mash-Up

I don't normally post cosplay photos here on my art blog, but this one's so creative, I could resist.  Hell Boy and Darth Maul are a perfect combination aesthetically despite being diametrically opposed in terms of character.  Yet, Luis and Rulison make it work.  I'd love to see this concept expanded into a series of fan art comics or maybe a fan film.

Subsequently, several others were discovered in their home.  On April 7, 2005 the first was seen in public on the exterior of Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea.

Hellboy — Mike Mignola

"Hellboy" by Mike Mignola

Interview: Long Island Business News interviews several Long Island retailers about the effect the surge in comics sales has had on them—and why customers are loyal to print in this digital age.

Interview: Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso: I won’t say no to sexy female superheroes. Comics still need to be naughty and fun. “I challenge you to find in Ms. Marvel anything that resembles the Playboy model standard. But I don’t want to be Mr. Goody-Two-Shoes. We’re creating stories. I don’t want to say there’s no room for stuff that’s not just fun. Then you’re censoring yourself. I want to make sure I have books like Ms. Marvel and Black Widow that I’m proud about and could give to my daughter. But at the same time I don’t want to be the PC police and say you can’t be naughty; you can’t be fun.”

Annie Bulloch used to get the cold shoulder when she went to her local comic shop, so now that she is a comics retailer herself, she offers Ladies Nights that draw more than 100 customers to her store, 8th Dimension in Houston.  Says Bulloch, “No one should ever have to feel like they’re brave for going to a comic shop.”  I don't which is more surprising, that a comic book shop can afford to give the cold shoulder to any sort of customer, or that someone would choose to open up a comic shop in this economic climate.  Either way, it's a good read.

Kirby sets us right: "There is a never-ending and pointless debate in comics criticism over the relative values of words and pictures, over whether the script or artwork is the most vital part of a comic story. It'll never end because there are valid points for both sides of the arguments, and it's totally pointless because the obvious answer is that the beauty of comics isn't just in a brilliant story or gorgeous art, it's in the alchemical magic of their synthesis."
