Interior Design: Haunted Mansion Basement

Haunted Mansion Basement by Josh Brown

Okay, the Haunted Mansion was always my favorite Disney World ride, but I'm clearly not its number one fan.  Super Fan Josh Brown recently posted photos of he and his wife in full cosplay posing in their incredibly elaborate Haunted Mansion-themed basement.  This was clearly a work of love bordering on obsession.  In an interview with Inside the Magic, he explains his basement like this:
“When I was 11 years old, on our second trip to WDW, my grandparents sent me off on a sort of day camp called Wonders of Disney. It was sort of a class that focused on animation, but during that day the tools is too the Magic Kingdom, and particularly the Haunted Mansion. Before we went in, they were telling us fun facts or whatever about the ride, and the guide explained how Pepper’s Ghost works. That flipped a switch in my 11 year old brain that was like, ‘Oh my god, I could do this.’ (Naive to say the least). I got a little obsessed.”

Quick Pic: Ominous Mickey

I would not recommend the Disney theme park in northeast Ohio.

"I would not recommend the Disney theme park in northeast Ohio."

... honestly, the seven dwarves were just a couple old hobos sharing a needle.  Next time we spring for the Florida park.  I hear they have rooms where the mattresses don't smell like urine.

We've seen Jedi Disney Princesses before, but this time, Tom Hodges has put his designs onto a series of t-shirts available for a limited time from TeeFury.  The designs look great, especially Cinderella and Jasmine.

Mash-Up: Force Awakens / Frozen

It doesn’t have to be a Death Star, Kylo  :C

"It doesn’t have to be a Death Star, Kylo  :C "

Tumblr user Katarzyna Witerscheim has woken up to the fact that Kylo Ren from The Force Awakens is basically just Elsa from Frozen.  They both throw tantrums.  Neither has control of their power.  And, they're both dealing with a whole lot of inner turmoil.

Tren Fraszka even wrote some extended lyrics for "Do You Want To Build A Death Star?"  Check it out below, along with more mash-ups.

Mash-Up: Winnie the Chew

"Wookiee the Chew" Series by James Hance
A Star Wars / Winnie the Pooh Mash-Up
Prints available for purchase from the artist's website.

James Hance has been one of my favorite artists for years, both for his Doctor Who portraits, as well as for his cuter work.  If I had kids, their nursery would be wallpapered in his posters.  Sadly, though, I don't have kids, and there's something distinctly creep about a grown man with Winnie the Pooh art hanging on his wall.

For Christmas, Hance released the first "Wookiee the Chew" audio book as a free download.

Paintings: Daenerys and Pete’s Dragon

Daenerys Targaryen and Pete

"Daenerys Targaryen and Pete’s Dragon" by Stephen Quick
Acrylic, Spray, Emulsion, Ink on Board. 8" x 5"
Prints available for purchase from Splintered Studios.

I watched Pete's Dragon about a thousand times when I was a kid, and I'm pretty sure the irreverent dragon would have gotten along with the Mother of Dragons like a city on fire.  Stephen Quick imagines the meeting in his most recent work, which you can see being painting in the video below.

Mash-Up: Disney Fallout Princesses

Source: Imgur

Peter Slavik is counting down the days to the imminent release of Fallout 4 with daily illustrations of Disney Princesses surviving in the aftermath of nuclear fallout.  He imagined Snow White, Alice, Ariel, Rapunzel, and Belle as well-adjusted Vault Dwellers. Snow White is still trying to talk to animals, and Belle is nose deep in a book passing right by a super mutant Gaston.

Mash-Up: Disney Princesses / Star Wars

Disney Characters in Star Wars by Tom Hodges

Originals available for purchase from Etsy. US$250

They're all owned by the same corporation, so why not?  Technically, Leia and Padma already are Disney Princesses.  Personally, I think Merida from Brave would make the best Jedi, but I'm sure Hodges will get around to her eventually.

Video: Alice in 17 Classic Styles

"Why is a Raven Like a Writing Desk?" is a reanimation of the tea party scene from the classic 1951 Disney movie Alice in Wonderland in the style of seventeen classic artists.  The video was created by Gene Kogan using software and a style transfer technique to change the look of the scene to imitate paintings such as Starry Night, The Great Wave of Kanagawa, and The Scream.

P.S. If you ever wondered about the riddle "Why is a Raven Like a Writing Desk?"  The answer is that "both are written upon endlessly."  Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, was a contemporary of Edgar Alan Poe, but while both authors was the progenitor of an entire new genre (Dodgson invented modern children's adventures; Poe invented the murder mystery.)  Dodgson's contributions were largely ignored by literati of his day, while Poe was often the subject of literary journal articles.  Thus, this little dig insinuating that Poe's sudden prominence was a form of madness.

Mash-Up: Disney / Batman

"Gotham City" by Brazil-based Rick Celis
Disney / Batman: The Animated Series Mash-Up

What if you populated my favorite cartoon, Batman: The Animated Series with characters straight out of a Disney film?  Well, for starters, Geppetto has never been more sinister.  Also make sure that you check out Celis' Instagram account.

Mash-Up: Final Fandisney

"Final Fandisney" by Australia-based ZedEdge

After watching the recent blockbuster Big Hero 6, ZedEdge began to wonder that Final Fantasy would look like if it were a Disney movie.  The results are something like Kingdom Hearts.

Fresh Take: Inked Princess Series

"Inked Princesses" by Tampa, Florida-based Joel Santana

Illustrator Joel Santana did away with the squeaky-clean image of Disney princesses with his cheeky series of illustrations that features the classic, beloved characters as beautiful, tattooed pin-up girls.

The series reflects a colorful, vintage aesthetic and depicts each princess flaunting bold body art while engaging in activities directly related to her individual original story.
