Interior Design: Haunted Mansion Basement

Haunted Mansion Basement by Josh Brown

Okay, the Haunted Mansion was always my favorite Disney World ride, but I'm clearly not its number one fan.  Super Fan Josh Brown recently posted photos of he and his wife in full cosplay posing in their incredibly elaborate Haunted Mansion-themed basement.  This was clearly a work of love bordering on obsession.  In an interview with Inside the Magic, he explains his basement like this:
“When I was 11 years old, on our second trip to WDW, my grandparents sent me off on a sort of day camp called Wonders of Disney. It was sort of a class that focused on animation, but during that day the tools is too the Magic Kingdom, and particularly the Haunted Mansion. Before we went in, they were telling us fun facts or whatever about the ride, and the guide explained how Pepper’s Ghost works. That flipped a switch in my 11 year old brain that was like, ‘Oh my god, I could do this.’ (Naive to say the least). I got a little obsessed.”

Interior Design: Color Pallete Wall

Wow.  This is awesome, but Jesus, this guy has waaay too much time on him hands.
"This is a wall in my bedroom. When I bought my house I had to repaint everything since the previous owners where clearly not painters. Anyway after painting the room white I knew I needed an accent wall but couldn't decide on the color. So I made the joke about painting it every color.

570 different colors. All hand mixed using a syringe so I can recreate them if i ever need to. The only store bought colors were Black, White, Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta."

Interior Design: Baby Mario Room

Baby Mario Room photographed by
[ Previous Video Game Interiors ]

Imgur user ThePunNun shared this gallery of photos in which his friend transformed the walls of his room into a level from one of the Baby Mario games.  The artist hand-mixed 80 cups of paint for the murals, which in and of itself indicates the level of effort that went into this room.  There's no mention of how long it took, but you can tell from the detail that went into the pencil layer that it was a work of love.
"This is a tale. The tale of a boy and a room.  Well, man and a room. A talented man and a room. An awesome, talented man and a room. [...]

This is my friend, Matt. I met him at work, at a low-paying job. He works his butt off, and he painted this room as a favor/a "thank you" for a friend. It's been a year or two, but seeing as I've just met him, I think this deserves love now. We all do every once in a while. He's a genuine person in a world of nots, and he did a phenomenal job with this art. (First time the bastard actually painted, too.) He also does tattoo art, short films, and a ton of other creative stuff."

Interior Design: Star Wars Pixel Shower

Via: Reddit

This incredible tile mosaic was created by Imgur user GBFel in his basement shower. The design is based on a piece of pixel art by Andy Rash. Below, you can check out step-by-step photographs of the mosaic's creation. He writes that "The best part of being an adult is that if you decide that the basement needs a Star Wars shower, the basement gets a Star Wars shower!"

Interior Design: Super Mario Nursery

"I Know there's a lot of these out there already but our friend just got done painting this one for our son, I thought she did an amazing job."

Interior Design: C & H Nursery

Sadly, there's not a lot of information about this design.  I found the photos on Imgur, and there's scant explanation.  I guess the artist thought her work spoke for itself.  According to the photo captions, all of the artwork was drawn free hand and painted. It took all weekend for about 6 straight weekends to finish.

Interior Design: Super Mario World Nursery

Interior Design: Mario Kart 8 Nursery

Hardcore gaming habits come in all shapes and forms, but one of the greatest moments for an adult gamer is that moment when they get to share their love for a game with their children for the first time.  Whether that means dusting off the NES for an old school introduction to Super Mario Bros. or handing over the iPad, gaming culture has become a cherished tradition among nerds.  Over at Geeksmiting, one crafty father has taken the act of passing the torch one step further by building an incredible Mario Kart 8 themed nursery for his son Grant.

Under the YouTube channel Geeksmithing, super dad Wes Swain began constructing one of the more impressive gaming-centric rooms ever seen. Using a number of different tools of the trade, Swain manages to perfectly convey the look and feel of Mario Kart 8 into his young son’s room, almost certainly making gamers of any age jealous in the process.

For more information on the materials used in the project, check out GeekSmithing.com.
"After a year and a half of work, this puppy is finally done! After creating my Legend of Zelda and Yoshi's Island nurseries, I knew I had to up the ante just a bit. After searching online, there didn't seem to be any big attempts at a Mario Kart nursery out there, and with the newest version coming out, Mario Kart 8, that sparked my interest. I had a vision in my head and set out to make it happen."

Interior Design: Super Mario Shelves

Imgur user Drew recently made this neat set of shelves to hang in his daughter's bedroom.  They're spot on.
"Made some shelves for my daughter's Mario themed nursery. I think they turned out pretty nice!"

Interior Design: Portal-Themed Bedroom

"Portal, and its successor Portal 2, took the brilliantly simple concept of a portal gun, combined it with a fantastic storyline that included a sadistic but hilarious antagonist, and created a game that is just as replayable today as it was eight years ago. It was no surprise that my video game obsessed son took to it like a Cheep Cheep to water. Years after that first test chamber, he is still a huge fan and has amassed an impressive collection of t-shirts, toys, and collectibles based on the characters and story. So when it came time to remodel his room for his thirteenth birthday, and he asked for a Portal room, my wife and I wanted to make sure it was something worthy of one of Aperture Laboratories’ finest young test subjects."

Interior Design: Gaming Room Vault Door

Okay... someone's got a bit too much time and money on their hands, because this is the door to some guy's man cave.  I fully expect there to be an equally insane set of interior shots of the room in the near future.  If this is the outside of the room, the inside has to be incredible.

Interior Design: Life-Size Minecraft Block

"Life-Size Minecraft Block" by Hahabird
Source: Imgur via Reddit

Redditor and father hahabird posted photos of the awesome life-size glowing Minecraft block he made for his son’s birthday. Since the blocks in the game are about one meter, he decided to build one side of a cube true to scale. Then he added color-changing LEDs which can be remote controlled. The entire project took about a week in his spare time and only cost $85 in parts and paints.

Now if he can just keep his kid from taking a pick axe to the rest of the dry wall...
"My son loves Minecraft, so I thought I'd build him a life-size block of ore for his birthday. In the game each block is a one-meter cube, and that would take up way too much space, so instead I did one face that could hang on the wall, ready to be mined.

It's lit from the back with RGB LEDs that glow through translucent acrylic panels. A remote control lets you change the color, so it can be redstone, gold, diamond, etc.

It took about a week of work, off and on in the evenings. The cost breakdown was around $20 for the LEDs, $20 for the wood, $20 for the paint and supplies, and $25 for the acrylic panels.
I haven't given it to him yet. I finished it today, put it up for the picture, and then took it down and hid it. Tonight while he's asleep I'm going to install it, turn it on, and stick a bow on it."

Interior Design: Real Life Simpson's Kitchen

Source: CBC via Nerdist

The kitchen is a staple of TV sitcoms.  Practically every major comedy series from I Love Lucy to Seinfeld has been set, at least in part, in a kitchen.  But there's no kitchen more recognizable than that of 742 Evergreen Terrace, the home of the Simpsons.  Its blue countertops, neon green stove, and corn cob-covered curtains are all instantly recognizable.

Joe Hamilton and Marcia Andreychuk have now re-created the iconic animated kitchen inside their Calgary home as part of a remodel of the fifties era kitchen, and they’re doing an amazing job.

Andreychuk found the perfect fabric for Marge’s corn cob curtains on Spoonflower, which she used to sew the curtains herself.

Joe and Marcia are currently saving up to buy new “’retro-inspired’ granny-apple green appliances,“ but in the meantime they’ve used contact paper to make their countertops, cabinets, washer/dryer, fridge, and stove match the Simpsons’ versions.  (Though how you cook on a stovetop covered in contact paper is a mystery to me.)

Andreychuk told the CBC in an interview that they’re thinking about renovating their basement to look like Moe’s Tavern as their next project!

Interior Design: Elder Scrolls Basement

DC Comics artist Tyler Kirkham is a Elder Scrolls superfan.  In fact, he loves the Bethesda game so much that he recently spent around fifty thousand dollars transforming his basement into something that looks like it would belong in the game, Barcroft.TV reports.

The basement (or "Man Cave Supreme") is now decked out like an olde school Elder Scrolls tavern, complete with a medieval sparring area, a waterfall shower, a secret passageway, a wide array of weapons, and a set of arcane potions.  No mention of whether or not there's actually any booze, but wouldn't it be just like a video game geek to completely miss the point of having his own tavern.

You can check out the full story, and more pictures of the Utah basement, over on Barcroft.TV.

Interior Design: Steam Hellsinki

Photographed by Hn Photography

Steam Hellsinki, the first steampunk bar in Finland opened on March 13th, 2015.  The menu at Steam Hellsinki includes almost 40 varieties of gin (soon to be to 70), served alongside cucumber sandwiches and tea served in vintage tea pots.  The bar is one of several managed by a company well known in Helsinki for its themed restaurants, but by all reports, the popularity of Steam Hellsinki has exceeded all expectations.  Evidently Scandinavians love a good Victorian theme.

Interior Design: Pac-Man Floors

Ground Kontrol Arcade is one of those landmarks that makes Portland, Oregon such a unique place to live.  When Jessica Helgerson Interior Design was recently contracted to redesign the arcade's interior, they knew they were going to need some incredible retro game features.  One very nice touch was this excellent pair of matching Pac-Man mosaic tile floors in the restrooms.  There's Ms. Pac-Man in the women's restroom and Pac-Man in the men's.

Interior Design: Enterprise Desk and Chair

USS Enterprise Desk and Chair by Super-Fan Builds

Adam Savage recently built his own flawless replica of Kirk’s captain’s chair, but the guys behind "Super-Fan Builds" on the AWE Me channel have taken Trek furniture to the next level by turning the USS Enterprise into a glowing computer desk and office chair for a  Star Trek super-fan named Jake Geiger.  I can’t help but wonder what working with the USS Enterprise’s reflector dish between your legs, but it would be hard to find a reason to complain with this much awesomeness sitting in your office.
