Illustration: Home Song

Written by GMB Chomichuk
"I was contacted by a friend, couple months back, to help out on a poster for an upcoming "Make a Wish Foundation" charity event with a  theme "music as a form of therapy". Music is pretty powerful stuff, especially during rough times, so I was immediately on board with the idea for a visual piece.

At first we played around with an idea of a superhero using music as a weapon- but eventually decided upon a kid discovering the power of song on his own- and wielding it in the face of some fearful odds. Once the poster came together- I just fell in love with the character (Russ- I've decided his name is Russ) and the world. I want to see more! Soon after, I met up with the very talented GMB Chomichuk (we worked on Cassie and Tonk together) and he put together the powerful verbage to go along with Russ's short story/adventure.

Just did this comic because I liked the idea, and wanted to bring attention to a good cause."

Sweets: Victorian Halloween Cookies

Lovely Halloween-themed cookies for a good cause.  Click through for a tutorial on making them (it involves rubber stamps on icing) and more information on this very worthy charity event.
"These cookies (along with another, unpictured set) were design just for the GO BO! Foundation’s 3rd annual bake sale. If you haven’t heard of the GO BO! Foundation before, it was inspired by the last wish of Bo Johnson, who was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia at age 12. Despite the heavy toll the disease took on him, Bo used his time to help and inspire others, and it was his final wish that we continue to pay it forward, to help those in need. The GO BO! Foundation was created to carry on that dream by supporting cutting edge research and treatment, both locally and nationally, and helping families with children battling life-threatening medical conditions in financial need."

Short Film: Second a Day

This video is part of a new public awareness campaign by the NGO Save the Children to raise awareness of the ongoing Syrian Civil War.  It depicts a modern London girl suffering through the deprivations of war that might be experienced by a Syrian refugee.  I sat through the entire video expecting a science fiction twist before realizing that it was a real-world ad, but that doesn't lessen the power of the video.  The jarring juxtaposition of first world characters with the sort of situations we naïvely imagine are third-world situations is as effective in raising awareness of the plight of real children in war-torn countries as it is chilling.

Save the Children is collecting donations for child refugees of the Syrian Civil War.
"A young girl's life gets turned upside-down in this tragic second a day video. Could this ever happen in the UK? This is what war does to children. Find out more at http://bit.ly/3yearson"

Graphic Design: Hoxton Monster Supplies

Hoxton Street is a part of Dave Eggers’ 826 literacy project. He discusses his project in this inspirational TED talkDave Eggers is the guy behind McSweeney's Quarterly, and the memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.  What's great about his stores is that they aren't just fun, they're well designed.  Here's a gallery of the store's graphic design.
"Customers are politely requested to refrain from eating the staff, and why should you, when we stock a pharmacopoeia of different types of fear, a complete range of edible human preserves and everyday household essentials like Malodorous Gasses, Children’s Ears and Pencils.

Discerning monsters please note: a new shipment of A Vague Sense Of Unease has just arrived, alongside a pallot of Thickest Human Snot. These will not last long, so remember to bring cash only (since the events of last month we are tragically unable to accept credit cards, beans, or human sacrifice)."

Event: Gromit Unleashed

Photograph by Portmeiriana

Gromit Unleashed!, an exhibition of eighty artist-customized Wallace and Gromit sculptures, is being held in Bristol, England.  The five-foot tall sculptures will remain on exhibit for ten weeks before being auctioned.  The proceeds raised by the even will benefit the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity.  If you don't have the sort of scratch you'd need to bid on a major piece of art, you can help out by downloading the Detect-O-Gromit! app for iTunes or Android for a little over a dollar.  The apps contain more info about the sculptures and artists, and the proceeds from app sales also benefit the charity.  You can see lots more in the Gromit Unleashed Group on Flickr.
