Lecture: Digital Composites

Erik Almas shares his personal perspective on what a composition is and where he believes it falls in the world of photography. Beyond sharing his thoughts on digital compositions though, he also takes a BTS look at the making of one of his more recent compositions, using images captured while in the deserts of Namibia.

Lecture: Raw vs JPEG

It’s not news that RAW files have a far greater latitude than the same JPEG photographs. However, many beginners only understand this difference on a theoretical level.

In the video, photography educator Tony Northrup goes beyond theory, detailing the differences and actually showing us how much more leniency RAW files allow for in post-production.

Photography: Antropocene

Photographer David Thomas Smith

On exhibit at the Copper House Gallery in Dublin, Ireland March 21st - April 16th

Smith has created these images using a unique and groundbreaking technique. Each image is composited from thousands and thousands of thumbnails extracted as screen grabs from Google Maps, which are then reconstructed piece by piece using Photoshop to produce such incredibly detailed images, a level of detail one can only really experience in person.
"Appropriated imagery is a predominant feature in my work; I think it’s a rather fitting way to work in a world that has become awash with images.I make work that is multi-dimensional. Having come from a background in documentary photography, it is important to me to draw attention to socio-economic and political issues. While at the same time exploring more metaphysical concepts.I make my work aesthetically pleasing, rich in detail and large in scale in the hopes that the viewer can reflect on the ideas and issues that are prevalent in the work, whilst also getting a better sense of their own position in the world.'"

Photography: Victor Enrich

Spanish photographer Victor Enrich has two skills: taking amazing architectural photographs and then twisting them via photo manipulation to create astonishing architectural anomalies. Personally, they look like great zombie-defense fortresses, so maybe he’s onto something.

Video: Speed Painting Avatar

Like many people, Peter Ammentorp began wondering what he would look like if he were Na'vi, the sapient humanoid indigenous inhabitants of Pandora in the movie Avatar.

Out came the laptop, and under the power of Photoshop, Ammentorp was transformed from human to Na'vi in no time.  I know that there are many online applications out there that will do something similar to an uploaded photograph, but they don't produce results like this.  Those online utilities tend to produce something that comes across like demented Smurfs.
