Photography: Flatland

Turkish artist Aydın Büyüktaş distorts the streets of Istanbul into surreal cityscapes. The warped images were inspired by Edwin A. Abbott’s satirical novella “Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions.”

For the project, Büyüktaş virtually folded the city of Istanbul in on itself, transforming famed historical landmarks such as Sultanahmet Square, the Grand Bazaar, and Maltepe Stadium into visually warped collages that resemble scenes out of Inception.  Entire city blocks double back on themselves with city streets and sights stretching into the sky. The photos were captured via drones before being transformed by 3D software into surreal Escher-esque landscapes.

Photography: 365 Days of Clones

In photographer David Eger’s “Cloned Photos” project, he has recreated historical photographs, movie posters, and imagery using Clone Troopers and other Star Wars figures. This project is a “spin-off” of Eger’s also awesome 365 Days of Clones series.
"The photo project began on January 1, 2011 and was completed on December 31, 2011. As the title suggests, a new photo was taken, edited and added to the running total each day. Some photos related to historical events and photos, some related to what “day” it is and some feature the Troopers just fooling around.
365 Days of Clones were created, taken and edited on the same date as the original photograph or on the birthday of the photographer or artist who created the image. There were; however, many images that I missed, didn’t have the time to create or hadn’t thought about that I have now begun to go back and create in my new series."

Photography: Sketchy Self-Portraits

Self-Portraits
"The Sketches Inside Me" by Paris-based Sebastien Del Grosso

Sebastien Del Grosso came up with the idea for these sketches while he was updating his Facebook profile.  After taking a self-portrait, he began to sketch himself into the picture.   Rather than completely transforming his photos into sketches, Del Grosso only partially adapts the original pictures into a composite effect.

Come on, Disney!  Make with the cross-overs already.  Start by digitizing Earth's greatest heroes so that they can duke it out on the grid.

Paintings: Pop Culture Landscapes

German illustrator Oliver Wetter breaths fresh life into traditional mid-19th century landscapes painted by artists from the Hudson River School by digitally adding pop culture elements to them.  Kaiju, giant robots, and even Howl’s Moving Castle have been featured in his work. It just takes one enormous monster to transform an idyllic Albert Bierstad landscapes into a terrifying scene of impending mayhem.  My person favorite is "AT-AT Among The Sierra Nevada," a tranquil lake view featuring an abandoned AT-AT and a herd of deer pausing for a drink at its feet.

Elido Turco shares a series of photos that look as if they were taken from the family album of one of J.R.R. Tolkien's mighty Ents.  Turco uses a mirroring technique to transform the natural textures of the forest into lively faces.

Photography: Twisted

"These photos are a result of how intriguing the concept of distortion translates to architecture.  It creates a sense of falling into itself, like capturing a moment of demolition. I can destroy titanous steeel structures with the click of a mouse and create new twisted versions of reality."

Quick Pic: Ice Cream Cone

Via: Reddit

Sooo... up here in Michigan, we had our first frost of the season this weekend, marking, in mind, at least, the end of the summer.  Right now, I've got my space heater revved up, and all I can think is that there were far too few ice cream days this year.

Video: Photoshop Filters

"Photoshop Cs5 Filters Animation" is a small tribute to Photoshop filters. We used the Ps logo and systematically applied the filters in the same way, seeking the essence of the software, exploring the aesthetic values of its resources but letting the spectator judge them.

The project is comprised of two parts: A tumblr page, where all the effects live together at the same time as animated gif, representing all the steps from the original Ps logo to the final output.

And a video showing every filter one after each other, with a custom sound design that uses the same sound for each filter but with a different distortion effect for every case, exporting the graphical concept to the sound.

In both parts, the order of appearance is the same that offers photoshop."

Photography: Nature Preserved

Artist Ilkka Halso

"NATURE IS STORED IN A WAREHOUSE COMPLEX"
Created by Finnish Artist Ilkka Halso

Finnish artist Ilkka Halso digitally manipulates photographs of pristine landscapes by inserting extensive pieces of infrastructure. His recent works depicts massive constructs of man built to preserve nature, as if in a museum or theme park.  Is it pessimism or prophecy?  Only time will tell.
"My work deals with man’s ambivalent relation to nature. It is typical for human beings to mold nature, justifying their actions by their aesthetic and economic aspirations. But nature cannot endure everything. In my photographs, control over nature has acquired a concrete form. The elements of nature have been rethought and have, for logistical purposes, been packed into modules that are easier to handle. The whole of nature is stored in a gigantic warehouse complex and the most common types of nature from soil and flora to fauna can be easily assembled into working ecosystems. What is happening? Has nature been evacuated to await better times, or has it been simplified into merchandise and absurd tableaux? I am looking into the future. I don’t like what I see."

Photography: Erik Johansson

Impossible Photos by Swedish photographer Erik Johansen

Some photos are worth a thousand words, some are worth considerably more.  Johansen's work is a prime example.  He begins with an everyday photo of the real world, then adds in his own surreal twist with painstaking care.
