Starbuck Coffee Sleeve Sketches by Sleevebucks

Since last November, a mysterious artist going by "Sleevebucks" has been transforming the iconic Starbucks mermaid logo on the company’s coffee cup sleeves into delightful pop culture characters.  It turns out the mermaid is a surprisingly versatile template–sleevebucks has rendered everyone from Madona  to Wonder Woman. Soo Min Kim has made a habit of turning the iconic mermaid on Starbucks’ paper coffee cups into both fantastic and mundane characters.  Kim, who uses both markers and paint, clearly has a lively and healthy imagination. His variations on the mermaid comment on everyday life, make philosophical statements, or simply turn the mermaid into a fearsome death-robot.

I was rapidly scrolling down my Tumblr dash when I caught a glimpse of this photo, and I was like, "Wow, that's what coffee would look like in Night Vale."  When I had more time to check it out, that turned out to be exactly what it was.  I don't normally post photos of cosplay props, but this is just too good.

Illustration: Starbucks Coffee Cup Art



For the past few years, Seoul-based illustrator Soo Min Kim has been turning original Starbucks paper cups into wonderful pieces of art by creatively transforming the brand’s classic mermaid logo into pop-culture characters and drawing her into scenes of daily life.
