Illustration: 90 Days Til Halloween

"Keep your eyes on the prize!!"

The Christmas trees are already up for sale at Michael's.  Meantime, I'm counting down the days to Halloween.

Gaming Round-Up: May 15, 2017

5 Moms in video games who deserve our thanks - "These invisible mothers do have relationships with their children but we rarely have the opportunity to experience it. These mothers cannot grow alongside their kids the way a father/child duo can. That’s not to say that moms are doomed to stay as passive figures forever. There are games where mothers do exist, and their presence does not go by unnoticed. Here are some of our favorite maternal figures in video games."

Dead, Evil Or Distant: The Reality Of Motherhood In Gaming - "It would be fair to say that the invisibility of mothers is more a symptom of a larger issue in modern storytelling than it is a pitfall of video game writing alone. But while it's becoming more common to see a female heroine in a film or TV show, VideoGames remain a few steps behind."

Humor: Holidays are Over

The Christmas Holidays are over.

It's like all summer vacation in a week, except when it's over, you don't get to go back to your friends.

Humor: Seasonal Drinks

Less Appealing Seasonal Drinks by Gemma Correll

I've often imagined that a kiosk at the mall that sold nothing but cups of turkey gravy and whipped potatoes blended into the consistency of a milkshake would do very well over the holiday shopping season.

Humor: America Explained

Let's all take a moment to be thankful that, thanks to the magic of refrigeration, we don't actually have to look at things in order to eat them anymore.

The XKCD comic for 11/24/15 is this game. The goal seems to be collecting as many gold coins as you can and put them in a coin.. depositor. (Protip: you can keep pressing up to keep jumping up through the air. Hoverboard technology is sweet)  If you'd rather just browse around the map, you can use this one (everything tinted red can be passed through), or this one (which seems to be very slow). This image is the whole game space, which will ruin a lot of the surprise.

Short Film: Invaders

"Invaders" Written and Directed by Jason Kupfer

"Invaders" is a darkly humorous horror film that puts a holiday spin on the classic home invasion horror trope.  In it, a pair of home invaders consider their potential character choices just prior to their planned invasion.  They plan to break into a home and murder a family with a pair of axes, but things don't go quite the way that they had hoped.  The results are hilarious.

Sweets: Thanksgiving Turkey Cake

Yolanda Gampp of "How To Cake It," offers this step-by-step demonstration of how to meticulously carve a cake to resemble a turkey, then cover it in textured chocolate fondant skin.  I've never put this much effort into anything in my life, much less a cake, so I found the demonstration fascinating... and slightly exhausting.
