Fresh Take: Scary Potter

Scary Potter Series by Dylan Pierpont

Concept artist Dylan Pierpont imagines an even darker version of the Harry Potter saga you know and love. His illustrations evoke the spine-chilling spirit of Alfonso CuarĂ³n's Prisoner of Azkaban.
"A while back I was thinking about a few of the stories and characters that had a big influence on me growing up. And while Harry Potter was by far and away the most age appropriate of the group, I couldn't help but remember how dark some of the themes became over the course of the series. So this project is test to push those ideas to the forefront and see what we come up with... #ScaryPotter style!"

Fan Film: Snape and the Marauders

This crowdfunded Marauders fan film begins with the recently-graduated Marauders at a bar, toasting the end of their Hogwarts days and discussing the growing unrest in the wizarding world.  It builds to climactic duel between Snape and James.
Set in 1978 just after Harry Potter’s father James graduates from Hogwarts, he and his friends Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew celebrate at a bar, contemplating their place in a war they are to soon become a part of. When Severus Snape enters the same bar, knowing the part he might play in the war, James Potter decides to do something about Snape once and for all.

Humor: Harry Potter and the Plot Hole

Did anyone else ever notice how Dumbledore's concern for Harry's safety was sometimes less than rational?

Sketches: Harry Potter Moleskin

Harry Potter Moleskin Sketeches by Brazil-based Gabriel Picolo

Artist Gabriel Picolo notes that his new series of illustrated book pages are “inspired by spells, curses, potions and other stuff from the Harry Potter world.”  I wish these were available as prints, or better yet, an artbook.  Picolo says he’s planning to keep adding to his Harry Potter book art, so if you want to keep an eye out, here’s the gallery on Facebook.
"The Levitation Charm is one of the first spells learnt by any young witch or wizard. With the charm a witch or wizard can make things fly with the flick of a wand. The charm is an excellent test of your magical skills, wand control and above all, patience."—An excerpt from the entry in the Book of Spells

Sweets: Gingerbread Hogwarts

Gingerbread Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by Louisesiuol
Source: Imgur via Reddit

Every once in while, a dessert comes along that seriously forces the rest of us to ask ourselves what we're doing with our lives.  This week, that dessert is a gigantic gingerbread Hogwarts, which makes all our muggle holiday desserts look pathetic in comparison.  According to louisesiuol, it took her about a week to create the gingerbread castle and about a week to clean up the kitchen.
"Its all ginger bread! The roofs are dyed green. It took alot of trial and error. Getting the right dough was key and baking it a little lower and slower so it wouldn’t melt off the mold."

Humor: Better Harry Potter Intro

Created by Peter Chiykowski and Aaron Plants for EpicStream

Has it ever occurred to anyone else that the kindest thing to do for Harry would have been to leave him ignorant of the magic world?  He wouldn't have spent seven years in a constant state of danger.  He would have had the peace of mind of not knowing his parents were murdered.  Plus, he would have lived a whole hell of a lot longer, seeing as Voldemort would never have managed to resurrect himself without knowing where Harry was.

Video: Stewie Potter

Up and coming animator Patrick McCarthy wondered what a Family Guy episode would look like in the Harry Potter universe.  So he made this short parody, and it has already amassed over 850,000 views! Not bad.

Humor: At Hogwarts

"The Animated Objects" by Cecile Leducq of Ă  Poudlard ("At Hogwarts")

Evidently, the French translation of "Hogwarts" is Poudlard, a shortening of "Pou du lard," which means "hog lice."  This cheeky webcomic imagines life in a magical school if that school were populated by actual teenagers, rather than adorably forthright storybook characters.

On the website, all of the comics are in French, with English translations that appear when you roll your cursor over each image.  It's actually more fun that way, because you can try to guess what they're saying in each comic before reading the English version.

Fresh Take: Burton's Harry Potter

Harry Potter Character Illustrations by Victor Medina

Harry Potter Characters drawn in the style of Tim Burton

This would be a great animated movie.  Hogwarts is such a grim and gruesome place to begin with, I feel like Burton's style would be fitting.

Is Star Trek: Axanar still worth it? It’s been over a year since the don’t-call-it-a-fan-film Prelude to Axanar, set during the four-year war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, raised over $100k on Kickstarter. The entirety of that prequel has since been released and more Kickstarters (and now an Indiegogo campaign) have cropped up to raise more money for a feature-length Axanar film.
