Mash-Up: My Neighbor Poporgo

A My Neighbor Totoro / Star Wars: The Force Awakens Mash-Up

It's months until the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but people are already talking furiously about the latest edition to the Star Wars universe, the Porgs. Some people are calling them the new Ewoks. Some people are calling them the new Jar-Jar. Given Lucas Film's increasing concern with younger demographics since its acquisition by Disney, I'm not surprised by the addition of more cuteness. I am holding out for some Tribble-style humor, though.

Crafts: Spirited Away Bathhouse Model

Spirited Away Bathhouse Model by Sorakio (キオ)
Source: Twitter via Reddit via Imgur via NerdApproved

Check out the incredible detail in this handmade / handpainted model of the bathhouse from Miyazaki's Spirited Away.  I can't find a clear source for these photos, but I loved this model too much not to post it.  The artist doesn't appear to have a website, but if you know of one, please drop me a link in the comments below!

Also relevant is this palm-sized model of  Howl's Moving Castle.

Video: Studio Ghibli – A Brief History

With Hayao Miyazaki recently announcing that he was coming out of retirement to work on his new feature film, Boro the Caterpillar we felt it was the perfect time to take a look back at the history of the legendary Studio Ghibli from its early days to its top grossing films in Japan and its Academy Awards. Enjoy!

Anime Maru is a site that combines two of the internet's favorite formats: Anime and Fake News. Kind of an Otaku Onion. If you have any doubts, check out the site's list of the Top 27 Anime Series of All Time which include some fictitious entries (#5. Attack on Death Notepunch-Man) and some that are not very anime (#17. National Hockey League). Knowledge of the medium is required to get some of the jokes, but not nearly all.

Sculpture: Howl’s Moving Castle

Howl’s Moving Castle

I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle.  Clearly, though, my love doesn't hold a candle to Liz Marek's, because a ceramic piece of this size and intricacy could only be an act of love. Read more about how this piece was created at Instructables.
"It's about time I posted some details about my epic ceramic project from the winter. The process was long, there were a few bumps in the road and a few scares but I finally finished my beloved castle and it's time to show it off!! I have had a love for ceramics and building whatever pops into my head out of clay ever since I took a ceramics class for my elective back in 2007. There is something so relaxing and fulfilling about building something with your hands that becomes a functional/beautiful permanent thing. My Howl's Moving Castle project began with a love for the movie itself. When I first saw Hayao Miyazaki's film, I instantly fell in love with the characters and the dreamlike story. Who wouldn't love a magical castle that transported you through dimensions?"

Mash-Up: The Umbrella Throne

"The Umbrella Throne" by Saqman
A My Neighbor Totoro / Game of Thrones Mash-Up
T-shirts available for purchase from RedBubble. US$26.87

Totoro is the last person who belongs in Westeros. Sure, he'd get along with young king Tomin and his cats like gangbusters, but I'm pretty sure that his fate would be horrendous.
