Mash-Up: Force Awakens / Calvin and Hobbes

Star Wars: The Force Awakens characters in the style of Calvin and Hobbes

Brian Kesinger, an artist for Disney Animation Studios and Marvel Comics, told BuzzFeed that he got the idea for the series while watching the scene in The Force Awakens where Rey rides her makeshift sled down a sand dune.  "It struck me that she probably did that as a child and that’s when the Calvin and Hobbes image flashed in my head."

Interior Design: C & H Nursery

Sadly, there's not a lot of information about this design.  I found the photos on Imgur, and there's scant explanation.  I guess the artist thought her work spoke for itself.  According to the photo captions, all of the artwork was drawn free hand and painted. It took all weekend for about 6 straight weekends to finish.

Crafts: Hobbes Scarf

"Hobbes Scarf" by Ontario, Canada-based Tessa DAchille (Jillian Jiggs)
Prints available for purchase from Etsy. US$42.78

When I discovered this rocking Hobbes scarf in an afternoon of Imgur surfing, I went looking to see if I could find one to purchase.  It turns out that Etsy seller LoopTeeLoops is offering warm crochet Hobbes-inspired tiger scarf for sale, though it's unclear as to whether or not the Imgur and Etsy users are the same person.  Described as “super soft and squishy”, the garment is handmade from yarn and felt, measures 192 cm, and will help you identify yourself as someone who has great taste in comics.
"I crocheted a Hobbes scarf! Because what better way to fight off a Canadian winter than with a tiger friend?"

Fresh Take: Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin and Hobbes by Claire Gary

Imagine how different the strip would have been if it had been about a tiger with an imaginary friend instead of a little boy.

Mash-Up: Foster's Home for Hobbes

"Foster's Home for Hobbes" by Malaysia-based Kroizat
[ Previously: Calvin & Hobbes Fan Art ]

I'm not sure if this is sad or uplifting, but it's definitely fitting.  Not to mention that it's a lot happier ending than many artists have envisioned for the intrepid duo.
"This idea came out of the blue actually. Wonder what happens to Hobbes when Calvin gets older..."

I will NEVER grow tired of seeing new version of this Calvin and Hobbes illustration.

Photography: Hobbes' Big Adventure

While traveling with his parents to Houston, 6-year-old Owen Lake left his stuffed tiger Hobbes at Tampa International Airport.  After his mother called the airport, the T.I.A. staff not only found the stuffed toy, they also took it upon themselves to photograph it posed all around the airport on adventures during their lunch hours.  The staff created a book to give Owen when he passed back through on his way home.  The local newspaper reports that, when the little boy was presented with the toy and book at lost and found, his mother broke down crying.
This is such a fantastic story, and as a Calvin and Hobbes fan, I can hardly think of a better toy to send on such a big adventure.

This is one of the best tattoos I think I've ever seen.  It's cheerful, colorful, and completely unique.  Best of all, it ties together two of my favorite fandoms.  If I ever got inked, it would totally be something like this.

I guess this is what you'd call a "CalVan."  I wish there were more photos of it.  I'd like to see the other side.

Sweets: Calvin and Hobbes Cake

Calvin and Hobbes Cake

"I made this Calvin and Hobbes cake last week, she wanted something "whimsical" so I went on google to look for some Calvin and Hobbes inspiration.. I saw this image of them crossing the river and thought it was perfect!

This cake was quite challenging as I couldn't find any 3D Calvin and Hobbes toys or dolls anywhere online to use as reference.. so I tried my best to imagine what they would look like if they were 3D. I had to mold them to a scale/proportion where they wouldn't look too weird at a different angle. I had trouble with the tiger.. I had to remake his head a couple of times.
I started the background of the cake with white fondant and then painting onto the fondant after letting the fondant dry a bit. Calvin and Hobbes are made from colored gumpast.

The person who had requested this cake was super happy with it!"

Street Art: Lucasfilm Sidewalk Art Fest

Last September, employees from Lucasfilm, ILM, and other tenants of the Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco took to the campus sidewalks with chalk for the Lucasfilm Sidewalk Art Festival 2014, an annual event which attracts teams of 2-4 members competing for prizes and the glory of out-chalking their colleagues. The contest often inspires a bounty hunter’s haul of Star Wars-related artwork, and last year’s event was no exception.  The Calvin and Hobbes piece was a particular favorite of mine.  Read more about the festival at the Official Star Wars Tumblr.
