Concept Art: Hearthstone: E-Sports

"Illustration to celebrate Hearthstone as an E-Sport!  The main concept was to transform the cozy and welcoming tavern into a challenging and exciting arena!"

Concept Art: Nocturnal Butterfly

"Nocturnal Butterfly" by Kiev, Ukraine-based Denys Tsiperko

"My idea is an orbital station with mechanical titan on board, created by humanity to defend the planet Earth.

Most of the nuclear and chemical developments were transferred to this station in order to purify the planet and to preserve safety, and the project itself was called The Nocturnal Butterfly, due to its similarity to butterflies, roaming around the source of light in the night. Character’s design is also strongly connected and inspired by one of the nocturnal butterfly species - Laothoe amurensis.

Station’s operating principles: in passive state - it serves as scientific and development center, but, in case of any danger threatening our planet - The Nocturnal Butterfly comes out of it’s cocoon."

Concept Art: Neo Animal

"Neo Animal" by Shenzhen, China-based Mole Wang

This concept art alone is better than 80% of the cartoons I watched in the eighties. I'd love to see a Saturday morning cartoon version of this.

Fresh Take: Star Wars Cars

Alfa Romeo Giulia Stormtrooper edition
Star Wars Characters Reimagined as Cars by UK-based online car dealership Carwow

With all the hype surrounding the pending release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that all kinds of cool fan creations are coming out of the woodwork. The latest creation comes from Carwow, which reimagined Star Wars characters as cars. Boba Fett as a G-wagon. Han Solo as a Dodge Charger “Millennium” Hellcat. Jar Jar Binks as a Nissan Juke (we didn’t say they were ALL going to be popular characters or cars). Vader as the BMW Z4 Death Star Edition. The brilliant campaign includes eight different mockups, but we’re hoping we’ll see more before the movie release.

Illustration: Millennium Falcon Car

Millennium Falcon Concept Car by Robert Kovacs

Hungarian automotive design student Robert Kovacs conceived this Millennium Falcon concept car. He does a great job capturing the spirit of our favorite "hunk o' junk."  Not only is she fast and stylish, she can cruise for 12 parsecs on a single gallon of gas.  I wonder how long it'll be before some ambitious geek mods out a car based on this concept?

Concept Art: Kvothe in Tarbean

"Kvothe in Tarbean" by Canada-based Matt Rhodes
"I’ve been wanting to draw something from Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind books for a while now. Here’s the protagonist, Kvothe in the city of Tarbean.

Process wise, this was a self-inflicted exercise in patience. This image has been sitting in my head for months, but I’ve avoided it, knowing how much work would be required to do the city justice. I’m still on the fence as to whether or not this level of complexity helped or hindered. Something more abstracted/vague may have given me a better result, sooner."

Concept Art: Dune Animate Series

"Dune" by Canada-based Matt Rhodes

Matt Rhodes, the lead concept artist on Dragon Age: Inquisition has recently become obsessed with the Dune franchise, thanks to the amazing Jodorowsky’s Dune documentary (which I can't recommend highly enough for sci-fi fans.)  The result is some great concept art, inspired by Indian filmmaker Tarsem Singh, that makes us really wish that the folks behind MTV's Æon Flux series would create an animated series based on Dune.

Check out the pieces below.  There are only three of them, but they're enough to set your imagination on fire!
"I finally gave in to the siren song of Dune and was dashed upon the rocks like so many concept artists before me. There just isn't time to render these, but I’m reasonably pleased with the linework, so here they are!

Some context: I fell into a Dune-hole recently which started by stumbling across the INCREDIBLE art from what would have been Jodorowsky’s Dune film. That inspired me to re-watch the David Lynch movie again (one of my favorites). At that point, I had to read the book again. In the middle of my read-through, I watched a couple Tarsem Singh movies and my brain made a connection that I couldn’t shake loose:

I want a 4 hour Dune movie designed by Tarsem Singh’s crew (production designer, art director, costume designer, cinematographer, etc…)

So, in order to get that thought out of my brain, I took a clumsy swing at designing the cast of Dune through the lens of Tarsem Singh’s crew. To me, that meant making each character an operatic or theatrical expression of their role in the story. Visual storytelling cranked to eleven."

Concept Art: LucasWorld

LucasWorld Fan-made Concept

Source: Imgur

This image has been popping up across Facebook today as the “Star Wars Disney Park Plan”. To be very clear, this is 100% not the layout for the upcoming Star Wars Themed Lands coming to Disney Parks. This is a fan-made concept for a park named “LucasWorld” in San Francisco (as clearly labeled in the upper left). Even though we might wish it was real, this park isn’t going to happen aside from on paper.

Guardians of the Galaxy Concept Art

In telling a great story, Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the most beautiful films in recent memory.  Here's a gallery of some of the concept art that aided in the development of its special effects.
