Sculpture: Tony Stark, The Iron Man

Part of the "My Hero!" show January 17th-March 20th at the Bedford Gallery.
"Tony Stark has come to an untimely end and now his remains stand as a trophy in some super-villian’s lair. Underneath the gadgets and imposing suit lies mere flesh and bone.

With the superhero skull series, I was interested in the underlying vulnerability and fragility of these fictional heroes."

Prints available for purchase from Splintered Studios.
"New painting just off the easel, one of my fav mash up’s so far, Wizard Of Oz and Iron Man, so much fun to paint (even though it took forever!) Acrylic and Ink on Canvas."

Mash-Up: Iron Man: Ghostbuster Armour

Oh my god, why isn't this a real thing?  It would be such a brilliant one-off cross-over!  This awesome fan art comes from artist Marco D’Alfonso. He did the piece for the latest edition of The Line is Drawn for CBR.

Cosplay: Nine Foot-Tall Hulkbuster

Photographs by Ian Barnard

Whatever handmade costume you may have made out of cardboard for this Halloween, I’m sorry to tell you, that’s not a Hulkbuster costume. THIS is a Hulkbuster costume! Thomas DePetrillo of Extreme Costumes created this outstanding version that stands nine feet-tall and shoots actual lasers from its eyes. DePetrillo was obviously worried about encountering the Hulk. Now, not so much.

It took over 1,600 hours of work to complete. You try making some Iron Man armor that is light enough to wear and move around in. The end result is just amazing and looks authentic. Photographer Ian Barnard captured great process and final images of the suit, as well as a behind-the-scenes video showing how the costume was brought to life.

I think it's safe to say that, if Thomas ever does meet his cosplay nemesis, Hulk will have a very bad day.

Tech: Iron Man-Themed Lightsaber

This Iron Man-themed Lightsaber was created by The Custom Saber forum member Eastern57.  It's based on a toy replica of Galen Marek aka Starkiller’s lightsaber, blended with the design of Iron Man’s suit.  The overall color theme of the lightsaber is red and gold, and there's an arc reactor embedded in its hilt.  The lightsaber also plays back sound bites from the Iron Man movies, as well as some of the songs from its soundtrack.

In his YouTube videos below, Eastern57 demonstrates the assembly of the lightsaber.

3D Print: Steampunk Iron Man Hand

"Steampunk Iron Man Hand" by Jacky Wan (Valcrow)

Jacky Wan is an incredible designer, collaborating with Ultimaker in creating various projects. He recently combined two of his passions, movies and helping those in need. Inspired by e-NABLE’s noble mission of creating 3D prosthetic hands, Wan wanted to create a 3D printed prosthetic hand that would look “more cool” than what is currently available. He wanted to make something that a child would be proud of or be the envy of others. He also had the desire to change this disability into something that was “fun in its own way.”

Wan used the Raptor Hand design as a base in creating a steampunk style Iron Man prosthetic hand. The snap-together construction of the hand ensures each component is useful, including the gears on the back of the hand. Wan has made the design available on YouMagine for free download, and it has already been downloaded more than 500 times.
"While many of the printable prosthesis designs have come a long way in proving it's function. They still have a long way to go in aesthetics. This iteration focuses on building upon that base but making it more creative, fun and acceptable to children to alleviate the psychological stress of having to use a prosthesis.

This is a first version. Most of the aesthetic and base structure is complete. A level of refinement & revision towards the function and usability is required. Future improvements include: variable finger tension, rotatable thumb."

3D Print: Hulkbuster Armor Action Figure

Files available for download on Shapetizer. US$2.00

Since the recent release of Avengers: Age of Ultron earlier this summer, there has been a lot of fan art tributes, including a steady flow of elaborate cosplay costumes, chiefly for Iron Man, who pretty much stole the show.  We’ve already seen several 3D printed costumes from the movie, including full body suits, and prosthetic arms.

Designer Alex Cambrain decided that he had to have a Hulkbuster suit for himself after watching the movie trailer.  Only, he wasn't willing to jump straight to life-size costumes, and the toy lines weren't out yet.  So he modeled the suit himself and 3D printed himself an action figure with fully articulated joints.
"The software I used was ZBrush-4R7," Cambrain explained to 3DPrint.com. "This version includes some features which are vitally important for Robot modeling. For example, using "ZModeler” I can stretch geometric shapes very conveniently. I spent almost one week’s spare time on modeling."
The figure has twelve separate pieces that must be assembled after printing: the head, the torso, arms, legs, feet, thighs, knees and several nails.  He used an Ultimaker 2 3D printer to print out each of the pieces on the highest possible resolution. It took thirty-four hours to print the torso alone and another eight hours to print out the arms and legs.

For those who wish to download and print this very same Hulkbuster suit themselves, Cambrain has made the files available to download for $2.00 on Shapetizer.

Mash-Up: Baymax HulkBuster

"trying to mix two concepts...mixing the two popular characters, Baymax and the Hulkbuster. it's really fun to paint this...it's fun painting armors...this is really a challenge for me because of the amount of details..took me a while to finish it...glory to God..."

Fan Art Round-Up: Hulkbuster

Hulkbuster- Veronica by Ian Lim

Hulkbuster Fan Art Gallery

Tony Stark's Hulkbuster armor from Avengers: Age of Ultron movie may be the single best CG effect of any comic book movie to date.  It was the best part of the movie, in my opinion, and I'm pretty sure eight year-old me would have stabbed someone in the face to get his hands on a toy version of this design.  Below is the best fan art of the armor we could find.  As usual, if you know of any cool pieces we missed, drop a comment below!

Lego Creation: Avenger Mechs

Tinman X Ironman by tcflic

Lego Mech Suits for the Avengers

In this brilliant series, Titan Creations designs Lego mech suits for each of the Avengers!  I can't help but think that this would be an AWESOME Lego video game.

It would be just like Hawkeye to wear a mech suit and use it for nothing better than drawing an even larger bow.

Fresh Take: Iron Man x Samurai

Last year we checked out Clog Two’s samurai-inspired illustrations of Iron Man and War Machine. Artist Jack Lee not only shared his take on Tony Stark as a samurai, he also made a time-lapse video showing him making the drawing in Photoshop.
