Crafts: Spirited Away Bathhouse Model

Spirited Away Bathhouse Model by Sorakio (キオ)
Source: Twitter via Reddit via Imgur via NerdApproved

Check out the incredible detail in this handmade / handpainted model of the bathhouse from Miyazaki's Spirited Away.  I can't find a clear source for these photos, but I loved this model too much not to post it.  The artist doesn't appear to have a website, but if you know of one, please drop me a link in the comments below!

Also relevant is this palm-sized model of  Howl's Moving Castle.

Video: Studio Ghibli – A Brief History

With Hayao Miyazaki recently announcing that he was coming out of retirement to work on his new feature film, Boro the Caterpillar we felt it was the perfect time to take a look back at the history of the legendary Studio Ghibli from its early days to its top grossing films in Japan and its Academy Awards. Enjoy!

Fan Art Round-Up: Ghost in the Shell Pt 3

A gallery of fan art featuring Major Matoko Kusanagi of Ghost in the Shell.

I am SO pumped for this movie!  If it lives up to the promise of its trailer, it's going to be epic.  I'm a huge fan of the manga and anime, and I'm a huge fan of ScarJo.  I think this role is going to be a perfect fit.

When they announced the release of Snowpiercer, I spent a solid month ranting to anyone who would listen that if they could adapt Le Transperceneige, then they could adapt Ghost in the Shell.  How Snowpiercer got made first, I'll never know, but Ghost in the Shell's finally here, so I'm happy.

Here's some fan art to celebrate.   As always, if you know of an exceptional piece of fan art I've missed or you spot a piece I've miscredited, please drop me a note below!

Fan Art Round-Up: Ghost in the Shell Pt 2

A gallery of fan art featuring Major Matoko Kusanagi of Ghost in the Shell.

The big day's here!  I've been waiting for a worthy live action Ghost in the Shell movie since I was a teenager.  I was legitimately pissed when I realized a Scarlet Widow feature was never going to happen, but this is sooo much better.  My fingers are crossed that this is the first in a long lived franchise!  I mean come on.  If Resident Evil gets six installments, Ghost in the Shell has to at least merit a trilogy.

Here's some fan art to celebrate.   As always, if you know of an exceptional piece of fan art I've missed or you spot a piece I've miscredited, please drop me a note below!

If you'd told fifteen year old me that there would be a live action adaptation of my favorite manga with CG worthy of the franchise, I would have called you a liar.  But today's the release of Ghost in the Shell, and I couldn't be more excited.  To celebrate, I've rounded up a gallery of some of my favorite fan art featuring the Major, who is undoubtedly among the most badass heroines ever conceived.

As always, if you know of an exceptional piece of fan art I've missed or you spot a piece I've miscredited, please drop me a note below!

Merchandise: Anime Posters & T-Shirts

"Space Cowboy"
Poster available for purchase from Boomslank. US$20

Boomslank is an original anime t-shirt brand run by three brothers. They started Boomslank because they noticed a lot of the anime tees out there relied heavily on already licensed artwork. They set out to create an anime brand that was strictly based on original artwork. Check out their tees and posters over on boomslank.com.

Fan Art Round-Up: Akira

"Akira" by Drake Tsui (Quirkilicious)
Akira Fan Art Gallery

Rumors are circulating that The Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan is negotiating a deal under which he would direct a trilogy of films based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s acclaimed manga and anime film Akira.  Given the rising regard with which geekdom holds Nolan's work, the rumor was a cause for celebration among even the most hardcore Akira fans.  To celebrate our burgeoning hope, we've rounded up some of the best Akira fan art to be found around the web.

As always, if you've noticed that we've mis-credited a piece of art, or if you know of any awesome pieces that we've missed, leave a link in the comments below!

Fan Art Round-Up: Hellsing

"Checkmate" by Thailand-based Rusharil Hutangkabodee (Rusharil)
Hellsing Fan Art featuring Alucard

Let me just say this.  If you're a fan of anime and you haven't seen Hellsing yet, you're missing out on the best horror anime series of all time.  Not only is it dark, violent, and action-packed, artistically speaking, it's beautiful eye-candy.  There are plenty of place to check it out online.  I suggest you do so immediately.  But savor mightily, because the series is quite short.

There's not a ton of Hellsing fan art floating around because the series is twelve years old, but we still managed to find a few gems.

Mash-Up: Fusions

"Fusions" by Paris, France-based Pierre-Marie Lenoir
A Dragon Ball Z Mash-Up

Dragon Ball Z already allows for the fusion of characters to create more powerful characters, so it was only natural for French artist Pierre-Marie Lenoir to wonder what would happen in a fusion between DBZ and some of your favorite comic book characters.  I wish there some Deadpool in the mix, but maybe that'll come later.

Kusanagi

"Just wanted to draw her; I think this was the first anime “film” I saw, and I became obsessed with it. I love Kusanagi through every interpretation of her as more movies and TV shows come out, though; she is a true bad ass !!"
