Crafts: BioShock Little Sister Doll

Little Sister Doll by Kari Parham

Alright dolls freak me out enough to begin with and Little Sister is anything by cuddly to begin with, but Kari Parham has taken creepy dolls to a whole new level with with handmade Little Sister tribute inspired by BioShock.  Parharm has done an incredible job capturing the horror of Little Sister while still maintaining the "cute" element that makes your skin crawl in-game.  The final results are so good they look Photoshopped.
"The backdrop was made with foam board, poster board, hot glue, paint, and sheets of foam. It was made to come apart three walls and the floor. I just set the display in front of the TV to take a picture."

Video: Adam Savage's NERF Rifle

In another installment of One Day Builds, host Adam Savage made a custom paint job and modification of a Nerf Longstrike CS-6 rifle for his Imgur Secret Santa. Savage gave the rifle a more realistic and weathered look, replaced its internal mechanism with a more powerful spring, and added a working scope and bipod.
"This past holiday, Adam took part in Imgur's secret santa gift exchange, surprising a fan with a custom modded and painted Nerf rifle! For today's One Day Build, Adam shows how he took the Nerf toy apart and put it back together with his functional and aesthetic improvements."

Crafts: Enterprise Bridge Playset

Via: Make

Up close, this may look like a photograph of a television sound stage, but it's actually a tiny handcrafted playset created by uber-geek David Weiberg as a gift to his eight year-old son to compliment a hand-me-down set of Star Trek: The Original Series action figures.

As you can see in the close-up shots, the playset is fantastically detailed, but the best part is that Weiberg has posted step-by-step instructions for making one of your own!  The set was constructed from a combination of wood, styrene, PVC sheeting, and Apoxie putty.  Those tiny chairs were cast from urethane resin.

It might be beyond the skillset of your average hobbyist, but the process is a fascinating read.
"This project started when I found my old Star Trek TOS playmates figures. I gave them to my eight year old son who had become a fan of the old show. He began building simple cardboard play pieces. Inspired by the clean wooden design of some of his other toys I set out to design and create a modular play set that he could use to assemble various rooms aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. I wanted a set that could break down and store easily. I tried to use scrap materials where I could. The bridge was the biggest challenge so I started there."

Toys: Sculpture Action Figures

"The Thinker" and "Venus de Milo" Action Figures from The Table Museum
Prints available for purchase from The Table Museum. ¥4800

If you’ve ever imagined what Michelangelo’s “David” would look like while locked in heated battle with Rodin’s “The Thinker,” or how “Venus de Milo” would use a brand new set of articulated arms, The Table Museum finally has your answer.  These six inch limited edition action figures feature fully posable arms, legs, and even eyeballs.

Toys: TARDIS Prime

What if the Matrix of Leadership turned out to actually be The Eye of Harmony?  Andrew Lindsey was inspired by the Jason Casteel TARDIS Prime sold by GraphicLab earlier this year to create a functional mash-up of the TARDIS and Optimus Prime using a 3D printer.  The results are glorious.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for someone to eventually create a Dalek / Soundwave mash-up based of foureyedesign's design.

Based on Square Enix Star Wars action figure line

Square Enix recently released a seriously badass line of Star Wars action figures that includes Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and a Stormtrooper.  Iain Reed created this series of portraits based on the designs of toy line.  The action figure are pretty spectacular, and it's awesome to see that they are inspiring fan art like this.

Toys: Star Wars Samurai

image
Prints available for purchase from Tamashi Nations.

Last summer Bandai released the Samurai Taisho Darth Vader, a gorgeous action figure depicting the iconic Sith Lord as a fearsome samurai dressed in full battle armor. Now they’ve announce a few equally awesome additions to their line of Feudal Japan-style Star Wars Movie Realization figures, including one of the Emperor’s Royal Guard and a Sandtrooper.

For the Movie Realization series they’re known as the Akazonae Royal Guard and Teppou Ashigaru Sandtrooper. Both figures are covered in outstanding details and come with interchangeable hands and sets of weapons. They look incredible posed beside the Samurai Taisho Darth Vader figure.

Toys: Frosted Han Solo

Prints available for purchase from StoreEnvy. US$30

Falcontoys combined the iconic image of Han Solo frozen in Carbonite with frosted toaster pastries to create a limited edition art toy called “Pop-Art: Frosted Han Solo.” Each Frosted Han Solo is cast in resin, hand-painted, and packaged in a re-sealable clamshell package with (non)nutritional info printed on the back.

While these resin toaster pastries may look like the real thing, Falcontoys assures us they sure don’t taste it. So let’s hope no one tries to put Han into the toaster.

3D Print: Baneling

3D Printed Baneling From StarCraft by Zeeland, Netherlands-based Andy de Bruin

This 3D printed Baneling created by Andy de Bruin was inspired by the classic video game Star Craft.  It glows in the dark, and it was assembled from 3D printed components and Alabastine spray filler.
"This is my 3D printed model of a StarCraft 2 'Baneling'. I made a Zbrush sculpt some time ago (check here) and I recently got myself a 3D printer for very cheap. So, I just had to print this bad boy (or girl?)! Made it's bulbuous acidic pockets of Glow in the Dark PLA material for the extra effect! This model radiates a room!"

3D Print: Hulkbuster Armor Action Figure

Files available for download on Shapetizer. US$2.00

Since the recent release of Avengers: Age of Ultron earlier this summer, there has been a lot of fan art tributes, including a steady flow of elaborate cosplay costumes, chiefly for Iron Man, who pretty much stole the show.  We’ve already seen several 3D printed costumes from the movie, including full body suits, and prosthetic arms.

Designer Alex Cambrain decided that he had to have a Hulkbuster suit for himself after watching the movie trailer.  Only, he wasn't willing to jump straight to life-size costumes, and the toy lines weren't out yet.  So he modeled the suit himself and 3D printed himself an action figure with fully articulated joints.
"The software I used was ZBrush-4R7," Cambrain explained to 3DPrint.com. "This version includes some features which are vitally important for Robot modeling. For example, using "ZModeler” I can stretch geometric shapes very conveniently. I spent almost one week’s spare time on modeling."
The figure has twelve separate pieces that must be assembled after printing: the head, the torso, arms, legs, feet, thighs, knees and several nails.  He used an Ultimaker 2 3D printer to print out each of the pieces on the highest possible resolution. It took thirty-four hours to print the torso alone and another eight hours to print out the arms and legs.

For those who wish to download and print this very same Hulkbuster suit themselves, Cambrain has made the files available to download for $2.00 on Shapetizer.

Crafts: Rocking Speeder Bike

Rocking Speeder Bike

[Previously: Crafts: AT-AT Rocker ]

For as long as there have been dad’s, there have been cool dads, but we live in the age of nerd dad’s, and it is fairly evident that nerd dad’s take things to a whole new level of cool.

Tez_Gelmir has created an incredible custom rocking horse based on the 74-Z speeder bike from Star Wars for his daughter’s first birthday. He made the kid-friendly Rocking Speeder Bike out of plywood, some 3D printing work, PVC tubing, screws, and bolts.

This project was posted to Instructables, one of my favorite site.  It was really well documented, too. Here's a great video that Gelmer posted showing off the various parts of his project.  If you've got kids, you may want to head over and check it out.
"I have built my son lots of projects but with my daughter's first birthday coming up I felt it was her turn to get some project love and what better way than with her own Speeder Bike?!

The 74-Z Speeder Bike is best known for its appearance in the 1983 movie, Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. In which Imperial Scout Troopers, on the forest moon of Endor, engage in a vicious chase with Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa after the Rebels commandeered the speeder bikes to pursue their foes.

I have to say though, when the design first came to mind, I had no idea the time and thought that would be involved...."

Photography: Hobbes' Big Adventure

While traveling with his parents to Houston, 6-year-old Owen Lake left his stuffed tiger Hobbes at Tampa International Airport.  After his mother called the airport, the T.I.A. staff not only found the stuffed toy, they also took it upon themselves to photograph it posed all around the airport on adventures during their lunch hours.  The staff created a book to give Owen when he passed back through on his way home.  The local newspaper reports that, when the little boy was presented with the toy and book at lost and found, his mother broke down crying.
This is such a fantastic story, and as a Calvin and Hobbes fan, I can hardly think of a better toy to send on such a big adventure.

Toys: Iron Man Mash-Ups

Customized Iron Man Mash-Ups by Sam Kwok

Sam Kwok takes Iron Man models, repaints them and mashes them up with other pop culture icons to create into some seriously unique pieces.  The detail in the Hot Toys is already incredible.  Here are some of his more interesting pieces, but he's constantly expanding his Facebook gallery, so make sure you click through to check them all out.

Toys: Crystal Poke Balls

Crystal Poke Balls by PokeMaster Crafter

These crystal Poke Balls hold a 3D etched Pokemon inside them that glows with the LED light base.  I'm not a huge Pokemon fan, but I love the holographic look of these.
"Each Poke ball is made of a high grade k9 crystal the same material used in high end home decor. The crystal is carved into a 80mm diameter(baseball size) ball and has fine point 3d laser engraving done to it. Using the latest in 3d engraving technologies we burn the image straight into the crystal. This laser is 5 times more precise than traditional 3d engraving to offer amazing detail and realism to each Pokemon."

Toys: Steampunk Mario

Rodrigo Marckezini re-imagines our favorite plumber decks out in steampunk styles.  I'm pretty sure that I'd play this game!

Toys: Bioshock Infinite Vigor Bottles

Custom Bioshock Infinite Vigor Bottles by Zoe Brookes

"Undertow: the first vigor box I designed, definitely inspired by one of the first liquor bottles I fancied--the Bombay Sapphire bottle. Similarly to the Ultimate Songbird box, I designed the corners and edges to look a little worn, so that any slight damage incurred while shipping wouldn't stand out (much). The typography for 'Undertow' was inspired by the 'Voxophone' advertisement in-game."

Toys: Big Sister

Documentary: The Sucklord

The documentary from Joey Garfield centers around "The Sucklord," a guy who makes a living creating crazy custom bootleg toys.  For such a short film, this piece does a great job of sucking you into this man's private little world.  The man is unexpectedly dedicated to his art.
"Joey Garfield spends an afternoon with The Sucklord, talking Star Wars, Gay Rights, and why Super Villains have the upper hand."
