Link Round-Up: Spooky Stories for Halloween

All Hallow's Read is a Hallowe’en tradition. It’s simply that in the week of Hallowe’en, or on the night itself, you give someone a scary book. Scholars have traced its origins as far back as this blog post.  Of course, All Hallow's Read isn't a substitute for the tradition of giving away candy.  Trick or Treating is a rite of passage. This is just a great excuse to give someone a book.

Goodreads has generated a helpful list of 536 books to get your fright on this Halloween!  Of course, if you're looking for something short to while away the dark hours tonight without a trip to the store, here's a list of terrifying reads available around the web.

Find out if your House or Neighborhood Is Haunted with the Housecreep Website. Housecreep was started by brothers Albert and Robert Armieri when they found the bedbug registries to be seriously lacking information about other scary things that come with real estate. Namely, they thought people might want to know about murders, alleged hauntings, nearby gravesites, and other potential issues for the frightened and superstitious.

Humor: Internet of Randomware

"The Internet of randomware things..." The Joy of Tech by Nitrozac & Snaggy

After having upgraded to Windows 10, I find this comic chillingly prescient.  It took me a month to shut off all of the Microsoft services running in the background to restore my computer's performance to normal.  The thought of all the appliances in my house running on a Microsoft platform makes me want to become Amish... you know, if there was such a thing as someone Amish who never goes outdoors.

Merchandise: Anime Posters & T-Shirts

"Space Cowboy"
Poster available for purchase from Boomslank. US$20

Boomslank is an original anime t-shirt brand run by three brothers. They started Boomslank because they noticed a lot of the anime tees out there relied heavily on already licensed artwork. They set out to create an anime brand that was strictly based on original artwork. Check out their tees and posters over on boomslank.com.

Posters: Rockets of the World

There are a lot of rockets inexplicably missing from this poster, but that doesn't detract from the beauty of it.  For some lively discussion on the topic, check out the Reddit thread.  And if anyone knows where to buy one of these, drop a link in the comments below, please!

24 Reasons Why All X-Men Movies Are Basically The Same [Video]

The Cybernetics of Knitting

Here’s how to tell the new Underworld and Resident Evil trailers apart: Dark, confusing times have come to America. Times of turmoil. Times when difficult choices must be made. Times when the latest entries in two surprisingly long-lived actress-centered undead-fighting action series—both due in theaters next January from the same fucking studio—can release new trailers on the same day, both featuring their respective heroines on motorcycles.

Jenny Hval's new album "Blood Bitch" was released on 30 September. You can listen to it on Bandcamp. The official videos for "Conceptual Romance" and "Female Vampire" are up on Youtube. Hval discusses her new music: "I’m a vampire already… in that sense the vampire is always the human. When I write about it, the vampire is always me; and the vampire when you listen to a song is always you. We carry something dead with us."

Stranger Things Poster by Jakarta, Indonesia-based Ario Murti
Watch a timelapse video of this poster being created at YouTube.

I waited several months to finally watch Stranger Things so that I could binge it in a single weekend with my brother. Oh. My. God. It was good, bordering on divine. It's like they took every movie I loved growing up in the eighties and fused into a single series. Honestly, I don't think there ever been a franchise I loved this much that wasn't available on underroos.
