Russian edition of Lord of the Rings illustrated by Sergey Yuhimov
Here's a gallery of pages from a Russian translation of The Lord of the Rings featuring illustrations that depict the events of the novels in a motif that very closely resembles Christian iconography. It's startling to see such a foreign interpretation of the novels' events, especially given how deeply embedded the imagery from Peter Jackson's films is now embedded into our psyches. However, I can't help but think that these stylized images would lend the books the feel of an illuminated manuscript, making the story feel all the more real as you were reading the books.
"my childhood russian edition of Lord of the Rings had the most amazing, medievally styled illustrations by Sergey Yuhimov.
i haven’t appreciated them when i was a child (i obviously wanted something more aesthetically obvious), but now i think they’re just - really badass. going to upload all i could find, in three posts."
