Batgirl Fan Art Gallery
"I am taking over Batgirl starting in October! I’m co-writing with my friend Brenden Fletcher, doing covers and layouts for the amazing Babs Tarr, who will do finished art, and colours by the equally amazing Jordie Bellaire. New tone, new aesthetic, new costume, new everything. Really excited."
Last Thursday, DC Comics revealed to MTV that the Batgirl series will be taking an entirely new direction beginning with issue 35 in October as Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher take over writing duties from fan favorite writer Gail Simone and newcomer Babs Tarr takes over the series' art.
Fletcher described the new direction as "the best elements of Veronica Mars and Girls, with a dash of Sherlock thrown in for good measure," which basically the same as promising that the story arcs will meet with Tumblr's approval.
The single biggest change to the series, though, comes in the form of an overhaul to Batgirl's look. When I first saw the design Thursday morning, I thought it was one of those pieces of fan art that sometimes gets done by some ludicrously talented fan for fun. That stuff always makes me think "if only that was what they REALLY looked like," but no one ever picks artists I like to do the actual work. Only, guess what? They finally picked one of those artists.
Needless to say, the internet just about exploded, and the fan tributes have been flying thick and fast all week. In fact, the design was so popular that the Doc Martin website actually crashed, reportedly from a spike of traffic generated by Batgirl's new footwear. I've rounded-up some of the best examples and included them here, in this four-part fan gallery.
