Lego Creations: Zombie Playset

This is my entry for the Bricks of the Dead - 16 x 16 Challenge. It was a lot of fun, especially since I’m a huge fan of "Shaun of the Dead". This MOC is also my homage to the godfather of all zombie films "Dawn of the Dead", George A. Romero’s (and Dario Argento’s) masterpiece and 2nd film in the "Dead" franchise.

In the film, the boiler room floor is actually above the shopping mall, but I preferred placing the boiler room in the basement, otherwise my tower looked a bit strange.

I realised almost too late that the contest is more about some sort of destruction, like broken windows or crumbling walls and not so much about zombies. So before the poor zombie guy got decapitated, there had been a little shoot-out, in which some of the pipes and vents got damaged. We also have some typical technic brick bullet holes in the wall.

The ground floor – or first floor – features a fast food restaurant which also was not part of the film, but I liked the idea. Broken windows and bricks, food all over the floor. This strange scene is actually taken directly from the film. Special horror make up master Tom Savini played the role of the lead motorcycle raider and he and his gang had a lot of fun with the zombies and a pie fight.

The main task for me was to fit the moving stairs on the 16 x 16 plate.

The next floor contains a movie theater, also not part of the film. The entrance is barricaded, probably to lock some zombies in the hall. Didn’t work too well, some zombies are still free and found a pretty snack. The poor guy shot his brains out, because he couldn’t stand the pressure. By the way, his eyeballs also couldn’t stand the pressure (when he pulled the trigger) and popped out. Don’t try that at home, kids.

Look at the poster and what film they’re showing.

This floor contains a store from the film, though I left a ‘letter’ out (which I realised too late). More broken windows. In my version, the zombies are in the store, not like the ones in the film.

Hey, there’s also a guy, quite recently eaten. See how he’s transforming. The guy on the moving stairs will have to wait a little longer, but at least he can move his body with his arms after the transformation.

Finally, the arcade with our three heroes and our heroine. I created some stickers to match their original costumes. To find out what happens to them you’ll have to watch the film. No spoilers here. But it’s worth it.
