"Faking it" by Switzerland-based Jojakim Cortis & Adrian Sonderegger

In 2012, Swiss photographers Jojakim Cortis and Adrian
Sonderegger decided to try recreating Andreas Gursky's landmark photograph "Rhein II" using hand-built models. "It started out as a joke," Cortis told Wired in an interview earlier this month. "In our free time, when there's no money coming in, we decided to try to recreate the most expensive pictures in the world."
What began as a private joke between friends quickly spiraled into an ambitious professional project in which the pair set out to re-create the most iconic photos of the past two centuries in their own studio. They're careful to select images that befitting the title of their series, "Icons," while also avoiding photographs with human subjects. Their work has clearly paid off, as each of their pieces bears a startling resemblance to its original inspiration.
