Illustration: Frazetta's Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings Portfolio by Frank Frazetta

Frank Frazetta is most widely associated with Conan the Barbarianr, but the legendary artist did some his best work in his earlier (and somewhat more obscure) fantasy illustrations.  His illustrations for The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are a prime example.  They were originally published as a limited edition portfolio in 1975, and they remain some of his most squee-worthy pieces.  With the second installment of The Hobbit set for release, I thought it might be time to dredge them back up to remind us all that, even at the cutting edge of CG technology, we still have difficulty fulfilling the sheer potential of our more traditional art forms.
