“In the world of privatized freedom the Almighty dollar reigns supreme. The appeal and power of money takes center in this series of large-scale photographs. Society teaches that you can buy love, happiness, and status through possessions. Politicians buy votes through claims of lowering taxes, income tax, sales tax, and property tax to fund the war on terror, war on drugs, war on poverty, war on morality, etc. Our consumerist pursuit of happiness is the cause and solution for all of these wars.
Interested in both semantics and politics, Tague utilizes these dollar bills as a platform to create narratives that are a tug-of-war between politics and the pursuit of happiness. The aesthetic appeal of the dollar’s detailed and decorative engravings, masterful portrait and architectural renderings, and elegant fonts create a decadent allure. Furthering the effect with precise folds and twists he abstracts the imagery, over another layer of separation from the already elusive subjects: money and power."
