"Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" on the Glass Armonica by William Zeitler
The mechanical version of a glass harp, called a glass armonica, was invented by none other than Benjamin Franklin in 1761. The technical term for the instrument is hydrodaktulopsychicharmonica (hydro- for “water,” daktul (daktyl) for “finger,” psych- for “soul”). A glass harmonica was used for Spock's theme in the 1982 film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, as well as the 1991 film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, but it turns out that Star Trek wasn't the first broad audience for a Glass Armonica composition. Beethoven was a fan of the instrument, and it was a very popular instrument throughout Germany during his lifetime.
