Robin Protz
created this suspended sculpture with the form of a dragon made from over 40,000
golden buttons hung on four thousand lines. The piece measures 18’x12’x8’, and it was favorite to win at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the world’s largest
art competition. It made it onto the top
twenty-five; unfortunately, the piece was disqualified for a rule violation.
All art entered in the competition must have been completed within the three years
prior to September 19, 2012. When judges spotted a YouTube video of Nelligan dated 2008, they decided it was identical to the one
entered into the competition. Protz released a
statement claiming the dragon “was related, but not the same.”
