Woodwork: Yosegi-zaiku Demonstration

Available for purchase from Etsy. US$

This brief demonstration of Yosegi-zaiku, the traditional art of  Japanese parquetry is absolutely jaw-dropping.  I don't even know how this is physically possible.  The glue shouldn't hold once the wood is sliced, and even if it does, the sheets should want to fold up along the seems.  And yet, the guy in the video makes it look easy as making a sandwich.

I wasn't even sure what was happening until the very end.  It's not a tutorial or a documentary.  It's just a bite sized reminder that, even in an age of 3D printing and space age synthetic materials, sometimes the old ways of doing things are still the most impressive.

If  you find this video as intriguing as I do, you may enjoy reading a few more details about Hakone marquetry here or checking out the Reddit AMA with the traditional Japanese woodblock carver David Bull.

Here's the only other demonstration of this craft I could find on Youtube.
