Sweets: Cthulhu Cake

Cthulhu Birthday Cake by Beebers31

They were not composed altogether of sugar and butter. They had shape...but that shape was not made of matter. When the candles were right, They could plunge from tier to tier through the cake; but when the candles were wrong, They could not live. But although They no longer lived, They would never really die. They all lay in bellies... preserved by the spells of mighty Cthulhu for a glorious resurrection when the candles and the earth might once more be ready for Them.

In the Media: Tsunami Relief for Japan

On March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by the largest earthquake in its history. We've all seen almost live from the disaster, and we are all affected by this tragedy of historic proportions, whose consequences are still unclear today. If the numbers are undefined, we all know that people who live this situation need help now.
The CFSL community launched Tsunami Project to support the victims of the earthquake. To help, visit their website and enjoy the artwork and donate your own art for auction.  There's some really great stuff posted.  Whatever your tastes, you're sure to find something to your liking.

Billy Ray, who created the graphic, says "I created this visual timeline of the Battlestar Galactica universe after the season 4, episode 17 "No Exit" data dump resulted in near aneurysm for my friends and me. I later updated it to include key points from the “Caprica” pilot movie."

Lego Creations: Lego Space Alphabet

Chicago cartoonist Mark Anderson has spent two years designing and building a Lego spaceship to represent each letter of the alphabet. The project was inspired by Anderson's love of the X-Wing Fighter.
I was looking to create some LEGO spaceships, but ran into a brick wall when it came to design. I mean what hasn't been done to death already?! So, to kick start my creativity, I decided to do a scpaceship based on each latter of the alphabet. Enjoy!
Check out the entire alphabet at his Flickr gallery.

Red door on Fern Alley, between Sutter and Bush off Polk in San Francisco

San Francisco artist Jeff Waldman has launched a project that installs small doors in blank walls at odd spots around San Francisco. He began with this small, scaled-down red door on Fern Alley.  Jeff has titled this particular door “Shut in,” and he regards it as a sort of paranoia piece. Its exterior is studded with a half dozen interior locks and an amber light that shines out of the oversize keyhole.

From the close-up shots, you can see that the effect is, in fact, just a very skillful paint job. Make sure you check out the rest of the photos.

Crafts: Astronomer Matryoshkas

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b6iawUrI2Ik/TW8IrtZWxLI/AAAAAAAAnFU/WW4nf59OOsk/s1600/astros1.jpg

Astronomatryoshkas by Nate Bellegarde

These nesting dolls are too awesome for words.  Someone needs to begin manufacturing these for the Easter baskets of little geeks around the world.  Nate writes:
"My girlfriend is majoring in Astronomy, so for her birthday I made some astronomer matryoshkas. She is really awesome so I tried to make a gift as awesome as she is. I had planned them out for months and it was great to finally be able to give them to her and see the look on her face as she opened each one. These were done with acrylic on wood (I am really rusty at painting and acrylics are maybe my least favorite medium :/), and I kind of cheated and used a brush pen for the black lines, since I couldn't really pull off the detail in paint. The downside is that the ink from the pens comes off the paint when you handle them so I have to put a varnish on them. Hopefully, if you know anything about famous astronomers, you can guess who they are (without cheating!)"

Mash-Up: Angry Birds / Batman

Angry Batbirds illustrated by Daniel Halyburton and Jennifer Herd for Bite.ca. The Angry Batbirds collection is an inspired mash-up of two of pop culture's most prominent icons. It's definitely more fun to imagine these Batman-themed birds impacting with the rogues-themed pigs. But having played the game, I feel kind of sad that the pigs are the bad guys here.

Be sure to check out all the rest at Bite.ca!

Artist: Manuel Moura

Manuel Augusto Dischinger Moura created two illustrations based on the fortune cookie fotune, "One ounce of courage is worth more than a ton of luck." Manuel writes:
"This is one of the two ilustrations I did last year of two illustrations, I made last year for the magazine junto. It featured works from many of the most talented Brazilian illustrators, such as João Ruas, Atila Meireles and a cover by the very talented and also my colleague João Lavieri.

The subject for the illustrations, consisted in one ordering Chinese food and then drawing what ever fate one would get on the fortune cookie. My fortune cookie held the phrase: One ounce of courage is worth more than a ton of luck."
