When the members of the post-punk band Viet Cong met with director Brook Linder to discuss ideas for their upcoming music video for "Silhouettes," they had a few suggestions for visualizing what they describe as the “only obviously autobiographical song” on their self-titled album. “We’re all Sci-Fi junkies. There’s always a lot of Philip K. Dick and Arthur C. Clarke being read in the van,” explains singer/bassist Matt Flegel. “I think we mentioned Alien, Predator, Blade Runner, and 2011 as possible reference points for Brook to draw from.”
Linder clearly took the suggestions to heart. Employing a visual aesthetic that’s equal parts vintage and modern sci-fi, the mesmerizing video manages to accentuate the song’s dissonance and dramatic dynamics.
