Video: What Makes Black Mirror So Dark
In this excellent video essay on the incredible dystopian Netflix series Black Mirror, Youtuber Evan Puschak aka The Nerdwriter takes a deep look into how the series effects such a dark tone. Puschak
notes that Aristotle defined tragedy as a “safe place to feel pity and fear
in a safe environment” resulting a cathartic response. Due to the show's unique structure, the audience is never allowed to achieve catharsis and is left with only raw feelings towards each character, making them more relatable.
What Charlie Brooker the intensely smart creator of ‘Black Mirror’ has given us our tragedies that are often senseless in other words tragedies that withhold catharsis. The result I think, is that we end up feeling much closer to these stories. The cathartic appreciation that’s meant to transform our pity and our fear never comes and we’re just left with the pity and the fear. So why do we watch Black Mirror if it robs us of the pleasure often associated with tragedy. I think it’s because this feeling is a truly unique one in TV it’s unlike most other shows.

from 2016. The magnificent short, created in real-time using the Unity
game engine, follows an “amnesiac hero as he discovers a clue about what
and who he is.” The next chapter will arrive soon.

In this episode of Everything Is a Remix, host Kirby Ferguson explains Fair Use and offers three provocative questions to ask yourself before using copyrighted material.
"I recommend using this three-step test. For each clip you want to use. Number one: Is the clip you are using illustrating a point? …Number two: Is this point clear to the average viewer? And lastly number three: Did you use only the amount that was reasonably appropriate to make your point? …if you can answer yes to all three you have a strong case for Fair Use."

In another thought-provoking video essays, filmmaker Karsten Runquist considers the unusual framing employed by Sam Esmail in the first season of the television series Mr. Robot. In particular, he notes that the director's unique perspectives leave audiences room to draw
their own conclusions independent of the series' cinematography.

Video: Game of Thrones Pallette
Fans of Game of Thrones will know that it is hardly sunshine and daisies in the ‘Seven Kingdoms’, but what fans might not know is how the show’s color palette has been subtly been growing less
fiery and more icy to convey that message through the episodes.
Vox recently put together a video color chart featuring the color palettes of every single episode of Game of Thrones. The palettes were achieved by taking the average color of every ten seconds of screen time throughout the show.
It was discovered that the first episode was the lightest and brightest, before turning progressively darker and icier. As winter encroaches upon ‘Westeros,’ the show has become less saturated and the average hue much cooler. The bloodiest battles of the series also make up the darkest episodes.
While the Game of Thrones crew is renowned for its attention to detail, the meticulousness that goes into the color palette adds on to its line of remarkable and impressive feats.

Crowdfunding: The Electric State
The Electric State is a new narrative art book, created by sci-fi artist Simon Stålenhag, about a girl and her robot in the 1990s traveling west across the USA in an alternate reality. After a successful fundraising campaign on Kickstarter, Simon is now finishing the remaining pieces of art and writing text before he and the team at Free League Publishing get to work on book production. Video: HISHE Guardians of the Galaxy 2
How It Should Have Ended created their animated interpretation of how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 should have ended. It features character art and animation work by Daniel Baxter with background artwork by Otis Frampton.
Since it hit theaters we started building this episode. Some HISHE’s take longer than others and this one was one of those longer ones. One because there are so many characters in this movie we had to actually cut out some of our ideas. And Two we were in an extremely busy time over here with babies being born, going to conventions, and then moving HISHE into a new home. But it’s finally here! So please enjoy! This episode was a blast to work on. I’m sorry it couldn’t be 20 minutes long with 5 bonus credits scenes.

All across America, hardened criminals are donning the cloaks of elves and slaying dragons all in orange jumpsuits, under blazing fluorescent lights and behind bars. We meet with two former cellmates in who played D&D together in maximum security prison and how they are now using the game to integrate back into civil society.
