Abandoned houses offer unique opportunities from a visual point of view. The deterioration transforms materials. Texture on top of texture. New patterns overtaking old ones. Nature repossessing. This textural aspect to deterioration and the patterns that it creates can be rich and fascinating to look at.

I also find that the experience of seeing a deteriorated house (or any familiar object) interesting. When looking at the image we see a dual image of the house – one as it is, and one as it was. You see a huge hole in the side of the house not just as a hole, but also as an interruption of the known. And so the mind seeks to recreate the known. We fill in the holes. We project. Our eyes follow the angle of the broken awning to a point, now destroyed, and we can feel the mass that was of the front 3rd floor. The same with the porch covering. This visual duality – the mind flipping between destruction and pre-destruction – is magic. It's entertaining and engaging.

Food Art: Pantone Chip Cookies

485?  This tastes more like 186.  Clearly the oven requires recalibration.

Graphic designer Kim Neill usually thanks her clients with a freshly-baked batch of chocolate chip cookies. This year she decided to make something a bit more apropos: Pantone Chip Cookies!
She writes: The cookies were a HUGE hit with all my clients and I’ve already received request for refills. Interesting to see which colors went first. PMS 485, PMS 183 and Silver 877 seemed to be the most popular!

Mural: Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin and Hobbes Mural by How Brown Met Blue

"Freehand playroom mural, donated to the Reynold's Home, a shelter for women and children.

I've always been a HUGE fan of this comic strip. Working on this mural, staring at every minute detail, i gained a greater appreciation for watterson's beautiful work. i tried to respect the original works as much as possible, giving my full attention to even the smallest detail and trying to get the colors just right. attempting to recreate the look of watercolors using only latex paint proved to be quite difficult.

I hope i did 'em justice.

For some reason, i don't think this photo truly shows people how big this mural actually is. i think it was something like 18 feet wide by 10 feet high."

Cake: iPhone Cookies

iPhone Cookies by the Japanese bakery Green Gables

"Each one is hand made and there are individual icons of all the standard iPhone apps. There is also a signal strength indicator, Wifi graphic and they have even included the camera on the back, which is a great finishing touch."

These life size rectangular cookies are shaped like the handset, with a small camera lens marked out on the rear. The front has been decorated with small application icons in icing.  Each one costs $33, but they're selling like hot cakes.  The current waiting time for an iPhone cookie is two months.

Artist: Brian Despain

Brian Despain will be exhibiting his work at the Seattle-based Roq La Rue gallery next month. Opening Friday, February 11th, Tin Machines and Mercuric Dreams will highlight the artist’s expertise with the brush, with a new series of brilliantly rendered oil paintings of his signature whimsical robots amidst desolate landscapes. This exhibit will also feature a range of three-dimensional working, including his first two bronze sculptures. I've posted some of his work below, though the painting above is the only piece that I can verify will be on display at the show

See more of Despain's work and join the discussion at The Artchival forums.

Crafts: Nightmare Before Christmas Dolls

Kati Peck created there matryoshka ("nesting") dolls to resemble the characters from “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

The first (largest) doll is the entrance to Halloween Town. The entire doll is textured to resembles the bark of a tree. On the back of the pumpkin door is the entrance to Christmas Town, which has a Christmas tree painted on it.  You can see it in the other photos in Kati's gallery. The next doll is a very rotund Jack Skellington. The third doll is Oogie Boogie, the horrible sack-like creature stuffed with bugs. The Mayor of Halloween Town is the fourth doll, and finally, there's a very diminutive Santa Claus.

Papercraft: Mario 8-Bit Diorama

(Sean Foreman)

Super Mario Bros may be one of the most popular video games ever, but it doesn’t mean it always remains on the actual screen.  Sean Foreman of 3rd Foundation re-created everyone's favorite video game in all of its 8-Bit splendor. He mentions that some of the patterns were from Cubecraft, while others he designed himself, which is disappointing for all the fans out there who might want to imitate his work. Still, he provides inspiration credit to Laboratory 424 who have made another Mario Cubecraft Magnet Board we seen before.

Mash-Up: Cat in the Hat / Doctor Who

I read a recent criticism of the Moffat-era of Doctor Who being a glorified version of The Cat in the Hat, to which I couldn't help but think...well...."duh".

(Though we all know that the Eleventh Doctor is more Peter Pan than anything else, in case all the off-the-cuff remarks about fairytales and not growing up got lost in the bits where an eternally-youthful weirdo shows up to whisk a pajama-clad heroine to a realm where time has no meaning....)

Posters: Poe’s The Raven

Under Consideration created some very dark word art. These word clouds are the full text of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Printed in metallic silver on a variety of backgrounds, the poem has been carefully arranged using different weights of Helvetica to create a skull and cross bones that would do a pirate flag proud.

Short Film: ShapeShifter

ShapeShifter from Charlex on Vimeo

This stunning piece of animation was created by the Director of Charlex, Alex Weil, and a few of the company's designers as a break from the company's typical advertising work. Weil asked the designers to come up with a project of their own to enable their creativity and unburdened themselves of the the daily rigors of their usual projects. Their one madate was that something great had to come from this freedom, and I think we can all agree that the team suceeded.

The original concept came from Co-Director and Designer Diana Park. Her inspiration came from the idea of a machine that creates nature, rather than the other way around.  The concept grew from simple shape-shifting to a look inside the spirit and soul of a car.  To bind it all together, poet Fitzgerald Scot was asked to provide the words.  His poem Dreams (narrated by Gabriel Byrne) accompanies the animation along with music composed by Peter Lauridsen. The final effect is that of being in a beautiful but disquieting dream.

In the Media: Computer Headstone

Computer geek Hu Chuang, 26, of Chongqing, China was so crazy about computers that, after he died sitting at his computer, his family had a custom headstone carved for him in the shape of a monitor.  The custom stone features a keyboard, mouse and webcam.  A photo of Chuang completes the tribute.

"His parents kept his email address open and encouraged friends and family to keep sending him emails because, who knows, maybe he can read them on the other side," said one family friend.
