Sweets: Gingerbread Smaug

Gingerbread Smaug created by Caroline Eriksson
Source: Imgur via Reddit

This astonishing rendition of the mighty Smaug is worth its weight in gold!  It's the work of 3D confection designer Caroline Eriksson.  She's from one of the Scandinavian nations, but I'm not going to pretend to know which one.  She's the same artist who created the Gingerbread Gingerbread Optimus Prime.

Check out the making of video at VGTV!  You can't really appreciate this piece until you've seen how much patience went into attaching each of those scales.

Illustration: The Modern Dragon

Dragons Living In Our Modern World

"The Modern Dragon" by Cape Town, South Africa-based Lynton Levengood
Prints available for purchase from InPRNT.

Lynton Levengood illustrates dragons as though they were cats, which might not be that nerdy, except that I spent a good deal of my childhood in Pern, imagining just such a pet.
"I am an artist from South Africa. I grew up loving fantasy art and stories. The dragons that inhabited them always felt like the most imposing of characters. I loved imagining what they would look like. I try work humor into my work as much as I can, there is so much inspiration out there.

Cats and dogs inspire me with the funny things they do, old sayings and jokes, even the news. It really makes me happy to see people smile, both young and old as they look through the modern dragons."

Lego Creation: D&D Cover Mural

LEGO sculptor Eric Harshbarger has recreated the iconic cover of the 1977 Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set, the first Dungeons & Dragons manual, in Legos. Harshbarger spent two months working on this stunning piece. The finished LEGO mosaic is comprised of over 50,000 LEGO bricks in 20 different colors and measures 75″ wide by 90″ tall.
“Obviously, the countless hours I spent reading the rulebook and perusing the illustrations made a pretty big impression on me. In fact, I still run a Basic D&D campaign semi-regularly using this very set.”

Sweets: Smaug Cake

Tartas Imposibles created this gloriously geeky cake featuring Smaug and Bilbo as envisioned in The Hobbit movies!  The cake depicts Bilbo hiding from Smaug behind a classic edition of The Hobbit book. The pages of the book are torn like Smaug has just popped out of the book.

This Hobbit cake was made using sponge cake, fudge, and modeling chocolate. Smaug’s neck and head were made using Rice Krispies Treats coated in modeling chocolate.  Modeling chocolate made it possible to detail a Smaug with a complex blend of many different colors.  Bilbo was made using modeling chocolate.
