Sculpture: Maya

Luke Jerram created this pixelated sculpture of his own daughter holding a phone as a permanent installation for Platform 1 of the Bristol Temple Meads train station.  The sculpture was designed using an Xbox Kinect, aluminum sheets and more than 5,000 colored stickers. What's interesting is that Jerram is colorblind.

Documentary: The Pixel Painter

"The Pixel Painter" is a short documentary about Hal Lasko, a 97-year-old artist who paints exclusively in Microsoft Paint.  His work is a blend of pointillism and 8-Bit art.

Link Round-Up: June 5, 2013

Pixel Superheroes” by Istanbul-based artist Ercan Akkaya

'Kindness' covers all of my political beliefs. A new cartoon from Gavin Aung Than's Zen Pencils inspired by the late, great Roger Ebert.

On “Geek” Versus “Nerd”  To many people, “geek” and “nerd” are synonyms, but in fact they are a little different.

The Snore-Stopper made me giggle. “One brief, yet resolute punch and you again reign over nighttime peace.”

You too, can build your own Gatling Droid ... these are instructions for creating a 3D CGI robot, and comping it into an office. Pretty comprehensive examination of a 3D pipeline.

Video: My Desk is 8-Bit

"I recently found myself wondering what a video game might look like in the form of a stop motion animation. While a normal person’s response to such a question would of course be “who gives a sh*t?” I possess few of the qualities typically associated with normalcy and was irrevocably compelled to find out. This is the result."

Merchandise: Pixit Stamp

"Pixit is a customizable kit that allows you to sketch and stamp any image you can think of, using a one-of-a-kind process. Just sketch your design on the dry-erase top surface with the Pixit pen, then use the pen's reverse side to push down the designated pixels. Once the pixels lock in place, deploy the integrated ink pad and you'll be ready for stamping! Once your creation is complete, the compact kit is easy to wash and even easier to store. Trust us, this is the most fun you'll have with pixels since Super Mario Bros."

Sweets: Minecraft Cake

Minecraft Cake by Samikheel

For directions on making a cake just like this one, watch the tutorial video that we've posted from Marimo Marshmallow.
"The kid’s 16th birthday has come and gone. His party is tomorrow.

He asked if I could make him a Minecraft cake. Nerdy parents couldn’t say no. The husband and I worked on this one for quite a bit. Think we did okay. Hope the little nerds like it. Gamer parents = gamer kid."

Sweets: 8-Bit Link Cake

"The Legend of Cupcakes" by ImJustBek
Via: Reddit

ImJustBek baked these as a present to herself on her 35th birthday.  Each individual "pixel" is about the size of a half-dollar and coated with fondant. She writes:
"The reason they are different colored is the poured fondant is really thin and you can see the cake underneath. So Strawberry is pink and Chocolate is brown, et cetera. I added green food coloring to the glaze that went over the gluten free cake so my friend with Celiac Sprue would know which ones were safe. But he didn't eat any off the table but used the ones I had put aside for him in case of cross contamination."
