Humor: Great Seal of the United States

No, but seriously, who thought this seal was a good idea? Why not a dragon or a unicorn?

Fire and Blood by Tom Kelly

The Atlantic discovers what we’ve all known for a long time: The Sorting Hat is a personality test for the modern age.

"Child actor-turned-maligned-Star-Trek-character-turned-geek-icon Wil Wheaton has been fairly open about his struggles with mental illness and depression. But for those who haven’t heard about that side of his life before, Project UROK spoke with the actor/writer about the way his anxiety affects him and why he eventually chose to seek help. We’re debuting that interview exclusively here on The A.V. Club." By Caroline Siede; direct YouTube link.

Erwin Wurm just received a parking ticket in the city of Karlsruhe. Nothing to write home about, except for the fact that the offending object was one of his artworks. Austrian artist Erwin Wurm has become famous for bending, inflating and twisting cars, trucks and camper-vans in the name of art.

A lot of people were intrigued when Venus announced their 15mm ultra-wide macro lens the other day (sample images and video), but ultra-wide macros are possible with any wide angle or ultra-wide lens and a thin extension tube. Clay Bolt and Paul Harcourt Davies have been doing it (very well) for quite a while. They even authored a beautiful (and inexpensive) 93 page eBook on the subject. Russian photo blogger, Dmitry Pisanko, spent months digging through 100GB worth of archives from the Image Science & Analysis Laboratory of NASA, before compiling his selected photos into 6000 frames to produce a breathtaking, four-minute time lapse of our planet Earth.

There seems to be a recent flurry of posts (serious and silly) about genre villains actually being heroes—the latest case is being made for Sauron.

This is how the Sydney Opera House celebrated the Mad Max: Fury Road premiere last month.

Lego Creation: Jurassic Visitor Center

As much as I loved Jurassic World, Jurassic Park is still near and dear to my heart.  So when this fantastic Lego Jurassic Park Visitor Center came up for voting on Lego Ideas, it immediately caught my eye.

The set will include the main entrance hall with two dinosaur skeletons, “Les Gigantes” restaurant with gift shop, kitchen, VIP dining room, emergency bunker, showcase theater, control room, and the genetics lab with cold storage room. There will also be minifigs of characters like John Hammond, Tim and Lex Murphy, Donald Gennaro, Ray Arnold, Robert Mulddon, and “The Big One” aka “Clever Girl.”

Give the project your vote and help make it a reality!
"Over the years, almost every new LEGO movie licensed theme has been created to match with a new theatrical release. In the case of big movie franchises, some sets based on previous films were produced before the ones based on the new films. This has happened with "STAR WARS", "Toy Story", or "Indiana Jones".

So a good reason to release a fourth Jurassic Park movie was the chance to see LEGO products for the previous films, right?

Strangely, the last product license ignores the previous movies and is based only on the last film in the series, "Jurassic World". It looks a lost opportunity for such a license deal."

"Little Batman" by Madrid, Spain-based  Luis Gomez-Guzman

Check out this great "Little Batman" 3D sculpt created by artist Luis Gomez-Guzman. The piece was inspired by Alberto Varanda's character illustration, which you can see below. This is a fun character design, and I like how the 3D sculpt turned out.

Minecraft: Deathwing Kerrigan and Diable

If you think Minecraft is just about building stuff with blocks and avoiding creatures at night, you may need to dig yourself out of the cave around you and come into the light. In the right hands, Minecraft is nothing short of a creator’s toolkit where the possibilities are almost literally unlimited.

Twitch streamer Thorlar has spent the last 23 and a half weeks manually arranging virtual blocks in exactly the right way to compose the largest piece of pixel art ever seen in Minecraft.  Thorlarian spent more than 1,000 hours on the project rather than resorting to software. The digital illustration is made of 1,128,960 blocks, and the final image depicts Deathwing, Kerrigan, and Diablo, the three most recognizable characters from Blizzard's games.  Before you say "fake," know that he streamed his progress on Twitch, so he has got thousands of people who can attest to his feat.

If you want to get even closer to this, you can check out the interactive map of the project that will allow you to zoom all the way into every pixel/block. Enjoy.
