Sweets: Portal Cake

"My Portal Cake" by Life in a Day

Sculpture: Singing Glass

"Singing Glass" by Japanese artist Mika Aoki

Aoki creates exquisite glass sculptures inspired by her fascination with the visible and invisible qualities of the medium. What at first appears to be high-speed macro photographs of water droplets, turn out to be physical stationary sculptures carefully crafted from glass.

She often derives her inspiration from the forms found in microscopic life such as spores, fungi, viruses or even sperm. With a masterful command of light and glass, Aoki depicts these propagating life forms in a haunting yet beautiful fashion, which she calls “singing glass.”

Painting: Iron Legacy

Acrylic on paper, mounted to wood panel,
resined and framed in custom floating frame.
"The painting was fun to do, but the real adventure was the frame. The painting is mounted in the center, and protrudes from the background about an inch. The reclaimed frame was then scuffed, carved and sanded for a weathered effect, and I even cut and painted a custom name plate for the base. Like a dummy, I never got better pics of it, but you can see it down below. I then built a bracket and cradled back mount for the frame. I had a friend ship me some early Avengers comic books, which I collaged onto the back of the custom frame. Getting the whole thing together was a fun challenge, and I really enjoyed the result. I think I may be doing more of this in the future. Hope you like it!"

Artist: Francisco Guerrero

Artist Francisco Guerrero has been working on a project transforming all the characters from The Lord of the Rings into cartoon characters, and the results are a sweet mix of Disney and Rankin-Bass (who were responsible for the 1977 animated version of The Hobbit).

"It's been a long time since I did something about The Lord of the Rings, maybe a couple of drawings in old sketch books is all that I remember. I feel that Saruman was the villain of the story or at least the one you could visualize physically, but in the last chapter I felt that Tolkien downgraded the strength of character when he went to Hobbiton and enslave the villagers . In the movies, Christopher Lee was incredible, only the sound of his voice conveys great strength and authority, very impressive and is actually one of my favorite characters. Well, this sketch is really based on the film's character design, which I think is incredible."

Installation: The Immortal

This art installation is comprised of various life-support machines  connected to each other, circulating liquids and air in an imitation of a biological structure. The piece is intended to explore human dependence on modern electronics in medicine.

Installation: And That’s the Way It Is

This massive installation projects transcripts of the new casts of reporter Walter Cronkite in a Matrix-style read out on the front the College of Communication at Walter Cronkite Plaza, on the campus of Cronkite's alma mater, The University of Texas at Austin.
