Short Film: Treetop and Heaven

"Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux" (These and Those Treetop and Heaven) is a beautifully animated short film inspired by the work of Hayao Miyazaki, Jean Girault, and Syd Mead. You can definitely see the influences in this short.
A young boy who lives in a village on a giant tree, fall in the depth of the forest where he meets two strange natives who will help him to go back home.

Short Film: The Umbrella Factory

Lexie Findarle Trivundza and Nick Trivundza of the studio Naissance made this adaptation of "The Monkey's Paw." The visuals seem simple at first, but they work perfectly as the short hits its violent climax.
"One evening, a traveller knocked upon the door of three brothers. Asking for a place to stay, as he has nowhere else to go, he offers them his magic talisman for payment in exchange for room and board to come in out of the pouring rain. What the brothers learn is that the talisman is capable of granting three wishes. But be careful what you wish for.

Based on the Horror Short Story, The Monkey’s Paw, by W.W. Jacobs."

Short Film: Josephine and the Roach

"Josephine and the Roach" is a sweet, if creepy, animated romance film in the vein of Ratatouille. In it, a solitary Roach lives in the walls of Joesphine's kitchen, accompanying her accordion practice on his violin. Then one night, he has an idea for how to woo her face to face.
"A woman. A cockroach. The course of true love never did crawl smooth."

Fan Film: TIE Fighter

This really amazing 7-minute Star Wars animated short, drawn in the style of 1980s anime like Macross, depicts a space battle where the Empire are the good guys taking on a squadron of dasterdly rebels. Enjoy missile trails, awesome sudden close-ups, totally radical explosions, split screens of attractive TIE fighter pilots, and a vaguely annoying anime-inspired soundtrack. This PDF shows how it was all made and introduces you to the characters, along with some neat concept sketches.
"What if there was an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80s anime that's all but vanished from Japan nowadays? Well, I tried my best. Apologies in advance for not living up to Venus Wars standards. Drawn and animated by yours truly over 4 years' worth of weekends, with music by the living guitar solo Zak Rahman and sound design by up and coming audio technician Joseph Leyva. Fans of Lucasarts' seminal 1994 TIE Fighter game may notice a few familiar sights and sounds. That “incoming missile” noise gives me horrible flashbacks to this day..."

Short Film: Pandemonio

"Pandemonio is a kaleidoscope of monsters, animals and other strange creatures brought to life by the primitive and franzied pace of Zu's music. Each figure is made by overlapping felt circles. The animation is obtained by moving, resizing and painting every circle without deforming its perfect shape. Have fun!"

Jérémy Fumet, Fabien Robert, Flavie Vogler

"Hors Cadre" is an animated comedy.  Set in a mansion in rural Scotland, the short features a beautiful, highly stylized environment design.  It also very effectively employs rapid cuts used to intensify the chase sequences.  A lively soundtrack infuses the piece with a lively sense of action.  Highlights of the short include an internal conflict centered around a family history punched up with humor that stems from the film's supernatural elements.
"Duncan Denholm decides to sell his centuries-old mansion, but his long-deceased ancestors have other plans."

Short Film: To Venner

"To Venner" ("Two Friends") Directed by Paw Charlie Ravn of Profile Pictures

"To Venner" is a bleak coming-of-age story set in a dystopian future.  In it, women and children everywhere have been killed off by a disease, leaving the men of the world alone with the very last two orphans.  The men appear to have been transformed into mindless drones driven by their sexual urges, two young children battle to survive, believing that one day a "girl will come to save the world."  The film tackles themes of gender, sexuality, and hope in a veiled commentary on modern gender politics.
“Ten years ago a disease wiped out every woman and child. And the men began to change.”

Short Film: Danny and the Wild Bunch

"DANNY AND THE WILD BUNCH" written and directed by Robert Rugan

In "Danny and the Wild Bunch," a children's book writer who is having difficult selling her book, but when she tries out her editors' suggestions to make her story "darker" and grittier, the author's life becomes darker as well.
"A children’s book author is told that her new manuscript needs to be “darker”, but when her revisions piss off the characters in the book, they come back to make some changes of their own."

Short Film: Chronemics

Directed By Ed Barrett, Russell Etheridge, Max Halley, Stephanie Johnstone,
Tom Judd, Lana Simanenkova, and Milo Targett

"Chronemics" is a dark animated comedy that was originally produced as a series of fourteen separate vignettes.  Eash individual clips is a simple narrative focused on the notion of light and darkness competing for dominance in a world in which they coexist.

Given the heavy theme, you might expect a ponderous, over-dramatic piece of sophistry from "Chronemics."  Actually, the final cut feels like an old Merry Melodies cartoon with chase scenes and comedically-timed back-and-forth struggles.
