Tribute: Winsor McCay

Google is commemorating the 107th anniversary of the first publication of “Little Nemo in Slumberland,” the fantasy strip created by Winsor McCay, with its most elaborate doodle ever.  The animated doodle, "Little Nemo in Google-land," re-creates the story of the comic strip, which featured the dreams of 6-year-old Nemo, each of which ended with Nemo abruptly awakening by the last panel.

Published about a decade after the first color newspaper comics, McCay’s fantasy strip elevated the art form, inspiring generations of artists, including Walt Disney, Maurice Sendak, and Bill Watterson.

The Google Doodle highlights McCay use of saturated colors, Art-Nouveau style, and signature sense of whimsy.
